Can anyone come up with a suggestion, diagnosis or lead? My computer keeps losing power, sometimes only for a fraction of a second and turning itself off. This causes me to lose whatever i'm working on.

Any help appreciated. TIA!

My guess would be a power supply problem

You should be able to pick up a good one for no more than around $50 for a decent 300-350W PSU.

If that is the case, get a new one right away or it could blow other components. If you get a new supply and the problem still continues, I would look at getting the motherboard replaced.

Oagre!

I think I would check the power cord and also the fuse at the back of computer could possibly be in the process of quitting through metal fatigue. You should be able to check everything up to the power supply with a voltmeter. Anyhow you probably thought of that already, good luck

Internal Battery

It could also be the internal battery in your pc. You might want to get a technician to check it out. Most internal batteries are designed to last at least 5 years, but sometimes you get a lemon.

I guess I shouldn't have assumed such silly things.

From the way he described his problem I assumed this was a new problem, not associated with a new home, power problem elsewhere etc.

You would think that if the problem was associated with a power problem in his hime that he would be seeing this same symptom on other equiptment as well. Would you not?

I tend not to take power fluctuations and such lightly when it comes to my computer equiptment. When you put over $5,000 into your system (and that is just one of them) the last thing you want to have happen is to let a failing power supply run your system for any longer than necessary. Next thing you know you could end up replacing the majority of your system and not just the PSU. $50 is a small price to pay to save your system from a cheap power supply.

Most of the cases and systems now days come with very cheap power supplies. Just enough to power the system, the way it came. God forbid if you want to add anything else to the box such as a few USB devices or another hard drive etc.

I just had one of my boxes fry itself about 5 months ago due to a failing power supply which was causing the box to overheat. I came home from a weekend away to be told that my computer was beeping continuously all weekend (3 days) but it was still running fine. I turned it off pulled it out of the desk and when my hand was placed on the back of the case I knew right away the power supply had been overheating causing the CPu's to overheat as well. Well there goes that box..... my poor dual celeron was flaky as hell after that and I had to replace the cpu's, motherboard and the PSU. About $500 in all when a good $50 power supply would have saved me.

The first thing I do when I build a system now is rip out that peice of junk power supply and put in a good one.

I would be willing to bet that is where the problem is.
And I wouldn't suggest taking it out and testing it in another system either for fear of blowing up another comp. :)

Also the battery would not cause this problem either, the battery only helps to keep configuration settings in the BIOS while the computer is not powered on.

As far as good power supplies go I would reccomend Antec or Enermax.
Or the place CyberGoth reccomended. I have a power supply from there and it is fantastic! (thanks CG!)

I can have the power flicker off for a fraction of a second due to weather etc and this power supply keep on rocking while every other computer in the house resets! And that is without a UPS!

Now that is a good power supply!

...great advice...

oagre,

You've got a lot of great advice to follow up on. Here's something out of the ordinary - just incase none of the above works.

Do you have a power bar? Does it have a reset button? Do you have really long feet?

Talk about a long shot but...could you be inadvertently touching the reset button on your power bar with your feet?

Just wondering.

Hey Oarge, all the suggestions from our terbs members are valid. However, before you are going replace anything, please check if there's any loose connection or grounding problem within any component inside your computer. I have the exact same problem with my other computer 2 years ago. Very frequent it just suddenly reboot itself while I was typing on the keyboard. I had UPS so it won't be power search problem. I replaced PSU but didn't solve the problem. I also thought it could be cpu overheat so I replaced a better cpu fan but no luck. You know what, it turned out to be my two stupid hard drives which were sitting too close, one on top of the other. Vibration occurred during hard typing caused these two hard drive touching each must short out something and system just reset and reboot itself. I finally secured the screws for the hard drives and placed a small grounding sheet in between two hard drives. Problem then disappeared.

Thanks to all!

I've cut and pasted all the responses and will print them out and refer to them if the puter keeps cracking up.

I've got my fingers crossed....

And Sasha, looks like you're far from just being a 'pretty face'!!!

One more . . .

Yikes, Oagre. If you take all this advice, you'll have a new computer! Here's one more.

I had a very similar problem a few years back. Did exactly as Sasha suggested to you: replaced PS.

Anyway, after much grief, discover the power switch on the front on the unit is faulty.

Good Luck.
