The deal has been signed. The opposition will now vote down the government at the first opportunity. Whether we then have an election or a coalition will be up to Michaelle Jean--historic precedent suggests we'll have a coalition.

Harper's only option now to cling to power is to prorogue (suspend) sittings of Parliament for as long as he possibly can to avoid giving the opposition any opportunity to table the no confidence motion.

That would be an extremely desperate move that would deny Canadians the benefits of any action whatsoever on the economic crisis--or anything else--but if the Conservatives are desperate enough for power they might do it.

You think the Conservatives are alone in a desperate power grab? How about "those guys" who lose an election and then form a coalition to gain power? Or do you believe they are acting unselfishly for the good of the Canadian people?

Unfucking real. You fucking idiots should step back and read the shit you write before posting.

Have you noticed that your language get more strident the weaker your arguments are.

In case you did not add the numbers, the coalition won the election ahead of the conservatives.

Really? So my argument that the Liberals (who lost an election and are now trying to gain power by forming a coalition) are hungry for power is weak?

I guess the Liberals are acting this way unselfishly, you know, for the good of the country. Interestingly enough the thing that finally motivated them into this "country saving" action was the prospect of losing government subsidies for their party.

If you really believe this you're a twat.

You just proved my point abot your language abusiveness being
inversely proportional to the strength of your arguments.
Q.E.D.

Are you disputing that the coalition won more seats than the conservatives?

So if this is done and, here's the next question: Do the conservatives stay together in the next election?

Layton has probably earned more power for the left then the old Reform guys earned for the right uniting with the PC's. And if people become convinced coalition is the way to go it maybe they decide to go back to being two parties.

This could turn out very effective. PC's always did better outside central Canada then the Con's have, there's every chance that those two parties seperately could get enough seats for a majority, and then end up governing further to the right then the Con's do now because of whatever agreement they reach.

I think politics in Canada have just become a lot more fun long term.

No, I'm disputing the following pearl of wisdom; "the coalition won the election ahead of the conservatives"

The coalition DIDN'T WIN AN ELECTION! There was no coalition 2 months ago when we had the election.

If you can't grasp this basic fact, run along and play with someone else. You're idiotic posts are now boring me.

I agree that things have become interesting. But for a coalition to work, the 2 "right" parties would have to agree not to run to split the vote. Having both a reform and a PC candidate would split the vote and ensure a Liberal majority.

But what I think has happened, is that the parties have to realize that they can no longer count on Quebec to help them win a majority. They are going to have to cut deals with the Bloc.

You are grasping at straws. Admit it. For your own sake, and I say this as
a dear dear friend, who has only your welfare in mind, get over the fact that
Harper is toast, and move on.:)

am i the only one who finds it amusing that people like Layton and Dion are more than willing to go cap in hand to the Bloc, whose expressed mission is the disintegration of canada. Further proof that when it comes to power, politicians are more than happy to hold their noses and go for it.

danmand, worry not for me.

It's painfully obvious you have enough of your own problems to worry about.

I believe that most coalition governments have been in first world countries, not the third.

We didn't give anyone a mandate, but we still need someone to govern. The result is parties are trying to get a functional majority as best they can. Harper tried through bullying, the Libs are trying through closed door deals. Neither is ideal, but this is what happens when noone is good enough to win a majority.

Can we call it a 'coalition of the unwilling' ?

More proof the Senate needs to be abolished.

In a very dark place
I went to the GG site and sent an email asking that she either keep harper or send us to the polls again.

The alternative is just too scary for words.

I really don't expect a response although I asked for one. They say up to three weeks as they are very busy. thats an oxymoron right there.
