The packaging is very light, but it should've not been included. I'm sure they made a few dollars with the millions meat packs they have sold.


A proposed class-action lawsuit has been launched in the Federal Court alleging that Loblaws, Walmart Canada and Sobeys “misrepresented” the weight of their meat products.

The lawsuit asserts the grocery chains included the weight of the packaging in calculating the price.

Lead plaintiff Carrie Corrall says in the lawsuit filed in Vancouver on Jan. 9 that she’s a B.C. mother who spends “hundreds or thousands of dollars” every year on meat.

The lawsuit alleges grocers are violating federal and provincial regulations by including packaging weight in the price of raw and cooked meat products that are sold by weight.

The statement of claim says that means Canadians have been “regularly overpaying for meat products.”

The proposed class action must be certified by a judge. It seeks punitive damages due to the alleged deception, arising during the present period of high inflation and public commitments by grocers to keep prices low.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

Loblaws, Walmart Canada and Sobeys were not immediately available to comment on the allegations.

The legal action was filed shortly after CBC News revealed the alleged practice in an investigation published last week.

The additional cost of cleaning the scales if the meat is packaged after weighing will probably up the price per kg.
Well at some point the meat was probably weighted, I don't think it would be just random

Not surprised to see Loblaws and Galen Weston Jr. on that list
They use parchment paper to weigh at the deli, why not just use that. It is not going to change the weight and it keeps everything clean.

I get all my meat at a local butchers. The meat is higher quality and the weight it out in front of you, it does cost a bit more but at least I know I'm not getting screwed
I do the same. I'd rather pay a bit more and support my local butcher and his employees sooner than a corporation. Been doing this all my life and have no plans to change.

Oh good. This is one of the reasons why I never bought at a butcher. I thought you had to eat fresh and while that is fine sometimes, I like to shop weekly or monthly.
Ask them to wrap individually if you buy multiple cuts of the same thing and plan to freeze so you can use at a later date.

I noticed Sobeys and Longo's doing the same thing with items such as hot or cold prepared foods that they sell by weight. They don't zero the weight of the containers before they fill it. Which means you're paying the food price for the container. Some stores have self serve tables where you fill a containers then they weigh the entire thing at the checkout, so you're definitely paying for the container at food prices. I know this, because I have a postage scale at my business that is accurate to 1g and I've weighed the containers on several occasions. Needless to say, I don't buy those items from them anymore.

I'll never buy roast beef from a supermarket again. I got food poisoning once from a shrink wrapped roast which had been re-frozen. Once is enough.

If something has been previously frozen you can't freeze it again. What you get from the butcher has not been frozen,

That's not true. As long as the meat has been stored properly and thawed slowly in the refrigerator, it can be refrozen safely multiple times. If done correctly, refreezing meat does not pose any health risks. Although, depending on the type of meat and how many times it's refrozen, the quality (taste/texture) of the meat could be negatively affected.

In other words, if you buy a frozen steak, sausages etc. thaw them in your refrigerator, then put them back in the freezer, they'll be completely safe to eat. Nothing bad is going to happen to it and that process won't make you sick. However, if you have meat that has microbes, bacteria, yeast, molds present, freezing will make them inactive, but once thawed, these microbes can once again become active and make you sick.

Simply thawing and and refreezing untainted meat won't cause it to go bad and become unsafe to eat.

True. The biggest issue w freeze refreeze is the quality of the cut as the ice crystals can damage the cell walls etc.

I bought a pack of chicken thighs a while ago. I noticed once I removed the meat the package still had to weight at least a pound as the absorbent liner underneath the meat was swelled to the max. Thus paid chicken thigh prices for skibidi water lol
