Eric Clapton cut a frail figure as he was wheeled through Los Angeles International Airport this week.

The 71-year-old Layla star was seen entering the terminal in a wheel chair while holding onto one of his teenage daughter's hands.

Dressed in a grey hooded sweater, baseball cap and tracksuit bottoms, the music legend was barely recognizable.

Outside the airport, his other two teenage daughters were also seen.

He can't be doing too badly. He's still doing concerts. But I'm sure bronchitis (which can hit and debilitate any healthy person) is going knock a 71 year old a peg or 3.

As long as it gets successfully treated, he'll be back looking good.

While he was writing his best music, Eric Clapton was a debauched heroin addict. 461 Ocean Blvd was the first album he made clean and sober. He never kicked the tobacco habit.

EC was in his own private hell when Layla became a hit: EC -slide guitar,Dave Mason - lead guitar, Duane Allman - rhythm guitar, Bobby Whitlock - piano.

I didn't know about the alcohol abuse, he's lucky to be alive at all. Heroin and booze punched Janis Joplin's ticket and probably others as well.

Ironically Layla was about George Harrison's wife Patty Boyd whom EC had become infatuated with. He did take her from George but the infatuation was fleeting. George Harrison felt the pain of broken love and wrote one of his best songs about it.

Heavy drugs and alcohol is not an automatic sentence of death at a young age.

It's like smokers who beat the odds I suppose.
The quality of life can't be that great when you've abused your liver, brain and body this way.
Correct. It's a matter of odds.

My point was that so many make it sound like an automatic death sentence.

Dion was a heroin addict from the age of 15, thankfully he beat it by the time he was 20.

Practically par for the course, but his cocaine addiction was legendary (I belive Pete Townshend helped him kick the habit and got him back into playing in the early 70s).
First I heard about that also, Pete Townhsend was a depraved lunatic in the 70's, Keith Moon's death scared him almost sober. As a joke, just prior to a gig, he put acid in John Entwhistle's fruit juice. Pete Townsend barely cheated death in the spring of 1979.

After getting his stomach pumped then going into rehab, Pete Townshend made a sober comeback with Empty Glass.

The photo for the album was from his former inebriation to excess period.

Rock n roll is the devils music. Clapton is just the latest in a long list of degenerates who proliferated the trash we call rock n roll while he was high on narcotics.

Pete Townsend was also a drugged out looney? Of course. Not only that... he also had a strange run-in with child pornography in 2003. He was let off the hook claiming he was viewing child porn for research. Sounds legit.

What's that phrase you hear from ardent followers of the music - "Rock out with your cock out!"

Disgusting.

Are you joking? Or are you really that much of an idiot? Pete Townsend is a great artist and has written plenty of great music. Drugs or no drugs, he has produced a creative legacy about a billion times the size of the legacy you'll leave. And Clapton is a giant of blues/rock guitar.

"Do you think it's alright to leave Cazzelino with Uncle Ernie, do you think it's alright, he's had a few too many".

Pete Townshend was sexually molested as a child. His inner demons nearly stopped his clock in the winter of 1979.

First I heard about that
I can't recall the specifics, but Townshend chronicles in his bio (Who I Am) how he, after witnessing Clapton's decline, thought to put together a band of Clapton's friends and organize a one-off charity show intended to bring Eric's interest back into performing and away from drugs (c. 1972-1973).

Pete Townhsend was a depraved lunatic in the 70's
To some extent; he's admitted to being nearly driven to death by his consumption of Remy Martin over the entire decade, and a worsening cocaine addiction from at least the recording of Who Are You (1978) to about the time of Empty Glass. By all accounts he's been clean since at least the early 80s, unlike many of his peers.

To add to legmann's post.

Pete Townshend wanted to determine for himself if Gary Glitter was actually a pedophile. The English Press got hold of his research into child porn, when questioned about Pete revealed that he was molested when he was very young. I believe, apart from his talks with his psychiatrist, that's the only time he talked about his childhood trauma.
