I got my form to request a new garbage bin today. The size options are a little bit strange. Why have a size that will only fit 1 1/2 garbage bags? Does anyone how many litres each bin is? At least that way we could compare it to our Rubbermaid bins. Rubbermaid will lose considerable business because of this new waste program I imagine.

What the fuck are we supposed to do with all those, now useless, Rubbermaid Cans:confused:

Here's what Target70 the catchily-named Toronto Solid Waste Dept's flacks for the new bins says on their website:
How many litres do the Small, Medium, Large and Extra-large Bins hold?
The City felt it was more helpful to reference the number of bags each size holds, thinking the resident could better relate to that form of measurement. For those that are curious, here are the approximate measurements in litres: S=75L, M=120L, L=240L and XL=360L.
If you do the math on those sizes to see how many bags go in each bin, you can see they need to rewrite their FAQ. I took the liberty of doing it for them:
How much garbage will each of the bin sizes hold?
The capacity of each bin is given in litres to the nearest litre, and we've also stated the capacity in bags, using common 67 litre garbage bags, thinking the resident could better relate to that experience. Note: we encourage you not to use bags in the bins. Compacting is also not allowed.

Small: 75 litres=1 bag and a bit, (8 litres actually, think almost three three-litre bags of milk) $10 rebate

Medium: 120 litres=1¾+ bags, almost but not quite two bags cost $39/yr. Since the first bag is 'free' as w/ the small bin, you pay about $48/bag for the additional ¾+ bag

Large: 240 litre=3½ bags, actually it's a bit more than a half bag, cost $133/yr, you pay about $51/bag for the additional 2½ bags

Monstro: 360 litres=5⅓ bags, not the 4½ they've been scaring you with. Do the arithmetic yourself. Cost $190/yr, you pay about $43/bag for the additional 4⅓ bags

Solid Waste Management Services reserves the right to increase fees if we find that individual homeowners are compacting their waste. Our collectors will be monitoring the set out of compacted waste.
Apparently we're paying by volume now.

Fuck me, I can't tell you how much this pisses me off.

The fucking assholes are in charge. Just another tax. Garbage collection in the City is already bad enough. (We don't take that, we don't take this, that's too heavy, that has a bungie cord on it that could fly up and hit me in the head.....garbage collectors should have to wear little pink tu tus for their uniforms.)

The illegal dumping is already bad enough, now it's only going get worse.

Yeah... I never thought about the illegal dumping! Garbage is a multi million dollar industry.

Hmm... how many will now just bring their garbage into work and dump into the large garbage bins? I see that all the time now where I work. We have gone from one day a week pickup to Tuesday and Friday being dumpster day.

It's going to be very difficult to convince a lot of the mom and pops out there, or some the ethnic communities that are very suspicious of anything government that they need to sign up for the new cash grab bins.

I can just see all the green garbage bags sitting at corners, or alley ways.

If the socialists down at city hall were smart about keeping the city clean, they would just pick up whatever people threw out.

It is happening....get used to it
They are forcing us to recycle
I see nothing wrong with that
We are a society of throw away

i was under the impression that the green bins were still to be used for organic stuff and the blue bins just replaced the regular garbage bag pick-ups every fortnight?
Green bins = organic "wet waste"
Blue Bin = All recycling
Black Bin (new) = everything else (regular garbage)

And the black bins you have to pay for....

Year after year.

I believe the "normal size" is $139.00 per year. There are times when I clean out the garage, or do some renovating where I have to throw out way more stuff than will fit in that stupid bin. Now it will take months to get rid of, orelse, I have to go and rent a pickup truck and drive it to the Transfer Station and pay to dispose of it.

Hence the reason I say that illegal dumping will go through the roof.

was this discussed during the last municipal election? I don't recall it.

I think its a bad idea. the recycling on a voluntary basis was working. I think this will undermine the program and will result in dumping of garbage.
