Cigar as a gift?

I'm looking to give a photographer I've worked with a few times a birthday present. He is an older gentleman (43) and enjoys the finer things in life. His wife has banned him from purchasing tobacco products for himself... which makes a nice cigar a great gift, in my opinion. It needn't be very expensive or a special brand; just a little break in the middle of his busy day.

I've looked up everything I can online but I'm overwhelmed and still don't know what to get. Can anyone (a 1 I'm looking at you :p) recommend a cigar they enjoy?

Thanks!
Becky

Monte Cristo, number 4 specify Cuban made ( they also make Montre Cristos on other countries to satisfy the US / Cuba embargo )
Since you do not know his taste, it is a reasonable assumsion that he will enjoy a mild but rich cigar.

on your girlfriend
Becky,

I don't know what your budget is, but these are a few of my 'reasonably priced' favorites. Most good tobacconists should have them available. Thomas Hinds, Cigar Studio, etc. Cigars are a bit like wine, everyone has their own tastes, but also like wine, most cigar smokers can appreciate a good cigar regardless of their preferences. I would recommend all of the below, personally I think they are all GREAT, even the non-Cuban ones.

If you are holding them for him for a while, please, please do not put them in the fridge! It can ruin a cigar forever in just a few short hours.

Below is from Thomas Hinds Website

Cuban
Romeo Y Julieta Romeo No.1 HF 5 1/2 x 40 $14.37 ea
Cohiba Siglo I HR 4 x 40 $20.26 ea
Montecristo Petit Tubos HR 5 x 42 $19.27 ea
H. Upmann Coronas Major HF 5 1/4 x 44 $11.83 ea

Non Cuban
Joya De Nicaragua Antano Robusto Grande 5 1/2 x 52 $15.45 ea
T.H Nicaraguan Natural Torpedo 6 x 52 $11.22 ea
La Finca Figurado 6 3/4 x 54 $12.05 ea
T.H Honduran Presidente 8 1/2 x 52 $10.48 ea

A bit more pricey Cuban
Romeo Y Julieta Exhibicion No.3 HR 5 5/8 x 46 $23.62 ea
Romeo Y Julieta Prince of Wales HR 7 x 47 $32.19 ea
Cohiba Lanceros HR 7 1/2 x 38 $40.55 ea
Cohiba Maduro 5 Magicos HR 4 1/2 x 52 $50.72 ea
Montecristo Especial HR 7 1/2 x 38 $30.77 ea
Montecristo D 898 HR 6 3/4 x 43 $35.74 ea

a 1 I knew you'd come through. I think I'll go for one of the Cuban Montecristos as someone else recommended them to me as well. Maybe I'll pick up one each for Chris and Andy while I'm at it, they deserve it.

BAMan, stang... I'm 21 and most photographers aren't that much older than me. To be 43 in this particular aspect of the industry is to be 'older'.

Hey Becky, have you tried asking Willie (Clinton)? Apparently, he knows something about cigars and their proper use (don't tell Hillary).

my recommendation are:

- Romeo y Juliet: Churchill (nice, smooth, and long)
- Cohiba: Robustos (Stubby, bold, and spicy)
- Montecristo: Torpedo (Nice, bold, and tasty)
- Partagas: No 2 - torpedo (strong, long, and bold)

That's my recommendation. If you want to get it one or two piece(s), I can help you on that.

Cheers,
D-

So is 43 still good enough for a 21?

Photography is a young man's game. Hand/eye coordination. Lugging all that equipment around. Long hours in the sun. Worst of all, dealing with all the groupies.

My new favorite is the CAO CX2, it's bold yet so silky smooth.

My favourite Cuban is the Montecristo No. 2. Expect to pay about $50 at most retailers. If you are going to buy Cuban, buy them at the La Casa de Habano (LCDH) at 141 Yorkville Avenue, Toronto, ON M5R 1C4
Telephone : 416-926-9066. That way you can be assured that you are not wasting your money on fake Cuban cigars.

I have a couple favourite non-Cubans. San Cristobal makes a really great cigar as do Padron and Rocky Patel. My favourite shop for non-Cubans is The Smokin' Cigar on Bayview south of Eglington. Ask for Freddy and he'll help you out.

Hey Player....

...where do you go to spark up?

I used to love doing the cigar thing (I'd go to that shop in Yorkville to buy for me and my friends...and of course there is also the hand / custom made shop right off of King @ Portland)....a fine cigar, a glass or three of Grey Goose and a beautiful adult entertainer at my side (or better...on my lap) used to be one of my favorite indulgences.

But now...where can you go to smoke them? No place in Toronto OR in Chicago (where I'd usually mule the Cuban contraband across the border to, for the consumption of myself and "my boys" back in Windy City, with a fine steak and expensive libations...) for that matter.

Where the fuck can a guy go to smoke a stoogie now besides his own home (not a chance....)?

I'll like 'em 35-55, (at least sexually) Dominant, and successful but not willing to support me financially (ie no hero complex!). Also, he has to be open to other women coming in and out of the relationship. And love music. Am I asking too much?
