Give me a break. It's a bit of a stretch from the news that he may have visited the occasional MP in the 90s to suggesting that he was the best customer for a whole neighbourhood.

Besides, so what if he did hobby a little. Most of us on this board are hobbyists (except a few who are too timid to indulge and prefer to cover up by moralizing). I for one don't feel he's in the least bit diminished by the possibility that he may have enjoyed the occasional rub and tug.
No one on this board should have a problem with Jack's hobbying. It's his post-mortem run for sainthood that has a few in knots.

If you look at it objectively, there's no true & lasting piece of legislation (municipal or federal) that can be attributed to him. He was the Opposition Leader for 2 or 3 months all because of a huge protest vote against Harper & the BQ and that the Liberals under Ignatieff were horrible. Amongst other people, the newly-elected NDP had a separatist and a bartender who had never been to the riding she now represented (nor could she speak to her new constituents in their own tongue) to evidence the protest & disenchantment of Canadians, particularly Quebeckers. Jack saw that disenchantment and capitalized on it. All the credit to him there.

He lost a mayoralty race to political lightweight, June Rowlands, and lost twice in federal politics before getting elected. He was not exactly a political powerhouse until the 2011 federal election. He opposed Toronto's 1996 Summer Olympic efforts, opposed and then switched to support the Clarity Act (regarding Quebec separation) and tried a coalition with the Conservatives & BQ against Martin Liberals.

Hey, we're all mortal and we're all not perfect. But somehow, Jack is now a saint & one of the greatest Canadians of all time? Give me a break.

Way over the top. Every Asian MP flew their flags at half-mast today. The Spadina corridor's favourite John has gone to the MP in the sky and there are no intervening Toronto Police officers or intrusive Toronto Sun reporters there to interrupt our beloved Jackie and his paid-for, ahem, massage from the FOB masseuse.

At least every Terbite knows he's immoral but somehow Jack is a saint and everyone conveniently forgot or swept this little tidbit under the rug.
big deal....bill clinton got a blowjob from a chick in the oval office and he is still a respected man..........who cares? Especially on TERB???

I say it's over the top. Now they want his widow to take over the party.

She's only one of about 10+ viable candidates from coast to coast. Get you facts straight. Some may give her the legacy vote, and of course she is getting strong support from HER OWN riding, but she isn't at all bilingual French. Even Ian Angus is more bilingual than her. She's certainly not the lead candidate with major baggage.

In that you may well be correct. However, I still think the grieving is over the top.
I'm not sure how you arrived at your conclusion, that the manner that people in Canada chose to mourn, is over the top. Its not the first time a beloved politician has been mourned by the masses. The following may hit a little closer to home for you:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reaction_to_the_assassination_of_John_F._Kennedy

In the United States, the assassination dissolved differences among all people as they were brought together in one common theme: shock and sorrow after the assassination.[5][6] It was seen in statements by the former presidents and members of Congress, etc.[6] The news was so shocking and hit with such impact, it was later reported that 99% of the U.S. population knew about his murder within three hours afterward.[7][8] The quick response of television and radio network news, interrupting national and local broadcasting across the country, can be credited for the speed with which people learned of the tragedy.[7]CBS Washington correspondent Roger Mudd summed it all up: "It was a death that touched everyone instantly and directly; rare was the person who did not cry that long weekend. In our home, as my wife (E.J.) watched the television, her tears caused our five-year-old son, Daniel, to go quietly and switch off of what he thought was the cause of his mother's weeping."[9]
[edit]

I realize that JFK was President at the time of his assassination. However, he was a politician, and not unlike Jack Layton, he resonated with a large segment of the population. As a Democrat, JFK's policies were similar to those of the New Democratic Party (NDP) - strong on social policy. I am of the belief, that politicians who are more 'socialist' in nature, are seen in a more positive light. JMHO
