Party line. Are you that old, MikeO? I never had one, but I've heard tales about them.Hi and welcome to you, new member. If you are seeking information about a lady, it's best to post in the 411 section of the board. 411 was the number we dialed on our black dialer phones with the pig tails back when some of us were a whole lot younger. We may have enjoyed the company of young ladies back then.... now, as retirees, even more so. Those of us who are really old can remember 'party lines' when one could listen in on other other party's conversations. It could be a lot of fun until the other party heard your heavy breathing.
In my 70's and still can get it up! I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was. (words from a country song by Toby Keith).Party line. Are you that old, MikeO? I never had one, but I've heard tales about them.
As a tween, I moved in a rural part of Beauce in the mid-1970s, and heard from some locals that until 1974 or so they had party lines. I can see in some backwater/cottage country location it would still be the case. in 2013, I had a colleague of mine bragging that his cottage was so deep in the woods that he had to resort to a satellite phone. In my 70's and still can get it up! Actually, party lines existed in some rural areas of Quebec like the cottage country in Gatineau lakes into at least the late 90's. I just Googled to find that Bell only decommissioned the practice in 2019...so you don't have to be THAT old to have experienced party lines. You picked up the phone to call someone and discovered the other 'party' was in mid-conversation. Or... you were in mid-conversation and might hear a clicking sound that indicated another party had picked up...and maybe hung up. This could happen several times during one of your calls. There must have been some embarrassing moments... let your imagination run wild. I believe that in some areas there were multi-party lines. Now just imagine the risk of someone listening in to your conversations on your mobile phone or reading your texts.
Wakefield area had them up until at least the late 70s/early 80s.In my 70's and still can get it up! I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was. (words from a country song by Toby Keith).

My cottage was near Blue Sea Lake in Qc and had a party line until I sold it in 1998. You were not supposed to know the identity of your party or parties but eavesdropping might have revealed some identities. Heck, in those days folks were still phoning Revenue Canada, their banks and doctors to interact business and revealing their names in doing so. On another funny note, my wife and I had a baby monitor so we could keep an ear on our sleeping kids while we were outside at our campfire .... and it picked up conversations and exitations (Good Vibrations) from our neighbours' bedrooms...if they were nearby and loud enough. Bert and Ernie sharing Miss Piggy could be VERY REAL entertainment around midnight with a glass of Crown Royal under a starry sky!Wakefield area had them up until at least the late 70s/early 80s.
