Oh please, enough of throwing rocks while living in a glass house

Canada and the US, the most "democratic" nations with the highest moral ground (sarcasm) have hundreds of people blindfolded and with no charges laid languishing in a far-ff prison reminiscent of Alcatraz except worse, even a 15-year-old canadian boy was held there with gaping bullet wounds and we have not lifted a finger in helping him. We betrayed the Kurds in 1991 after inciting them to rise-up against Saddam, and when they did we let them get mauled by Saddam's bulldogs. We have let down Georgia after inciting her to take back land from Russia, we maltreat our native indians, we lied to our people to wage war against Iraq and now Iran, the list goes on and on.

Tibet? How about Iraq? Or Quebec? Child labor in China? How about host-laborers (slaves) we bring (legally) from Mexico and the Caribbean to pick our fruits here in Ontario, and then we kick them in the butt back to their village after we're done with them?

China fooling us with a fake 8-year-old singer? Please! How about Stephen Harper and his cronies fooling us for years and killing people in Afghanistan for no national reason at all?

Underage gymnasts? Please! The only reason why we Canadians don't use them is because we simply do not have young girls with that kind of talent as China does.
You forgot about Milly Vanilly! I'm still pissed they won the best new artist their first year over Harry Connick Jr.!

Interesting that the OP, searching for words to describe the dastardly Chinese fakery, could only come up with "Hollywood trickery". Now what was that line about glass houses?

At first I resented the fact that a country with a disgusting record of human rights violations, a total disregard for the environment, the safety of the goods it manufactures or anything else that doesn't serve it's best interests such as china had won the bid to host the summer Olympic games.

Now I'm actually glad they won. In their pathetic never ending quest for the image of perfection and success (which hosting the Olympics is all about to them. Portraying to the world an image of success) they are actually showing the world what a bunch of phony assholes they are.

Examples of this are shown here from this article in The National Post...

During Friday's opening ceremonies in Beijing, a 9-year-old girl named Lin Miaoke sang a ballad to a packed stadium and a billion TV viewers. But the voice coming out of our TV sets wasn't hers. It belonged to a 7-year-old girl named Yang Peiyi.

The Communist Party decided Peiyi had the better voice, but Miaoke was better looking -- so they created a phony hybrid of the two. "The reason was for the national interest," said Chen Qigang, general music designer of the opening ceremonies. "The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feeling and expression."

Only in Communist China is being phony considered a "national interest."

And humiliating children in front of one-sixth of the world's population is just the tip of the iceberg. In the People's Republic of Milli Vanilli, this sort of phoniness goes on all the time.

Gymnasts competing in Beijing are required to be at least 16. The average size on the six-girl Chinese gymnast squad is 4'-9" and 77 pounds -- 30 pounds lighter than the average for the American team. The smallest Chinese girl weighs just 68 pounds.

Does that sounds like a teenager two years away from adulthood? As one former Olympic gymnastics coach put it: "We know what a 16-year-old should look like. They should not look like they are seven and maybe still in diapers."

Oh, and it turns out the lip-sync wasn't the only fraudulent thing about the opening ceremonies. The purportedly spectacular fireworks broadcast for the world's benefit were cobbled together with digital video effects --a cheap Hollywood trick that's as phony as Lin Miaoke's rendition of Ode to the Motherland.

In fact, Beijing itself has been turned into a sort of giant shrine to phoniness.

Three-metre high "culture walls" have been erected in front of shabby neighbourhoods, to block tourists' view of the undesirables. In other cases, crumbling buildings have been hastily covered with phony facades. All of Beijing's female meeters and greeters are pretty things in their 20s. In China's Potemkin world, surrounding tourists with women who are young and hot -- oops, sorry, I mean "flawless in image, internal feeling and expression" -- is very much "in the national interest."

The city was shamelessly phony even before it got the Olympics: When IOC officials came to evaluate the location in 2001, the government sprayed thousands of gallons of green paint on dead brown grass.

You have to be a giant phony to even think about doing something like that.

Phony tykes, phony gymnasts, phony lawns, phony buildings. If the Beijing organizers were looking for a theme, I guess they've found one.

Disgusting.

Get a fucking life retard.

Sure they make fake stuff and pirate movies, which is fine because it's a cheaper alternative.

As for the olympics, they try their best to put on a good show for the world which has huge responsibility and pressure, and if it needs "make up" to cover it, so be it. You telling me that you believe your own government tells the truth always, never covers anything up, and has perfect human rights for a billion plus people? China invested billions of dollars to build the bird's nest, water cube and other fantastic buildings as the infrastructure in preparation to host. They also did an amazing job at the opening ceremony which will go down in history as the greatest EVER. Your issue about the girl singing is peanuts, a 1/10000000000000000000000th deduction in gymnastic terms.

Let's take olympic swimmers which prepare for their swim, but at the same time use technology like speedos lzr to have a competitive edge in the water, but they use it as a tool, "cheat" or "fake" in your opinion, to win. China is using whatever tool necessary to win aka put on a great show, and so far it's great.

As for those protestors, if China didn't win the olympics, they wouldn't be doing anything at all so they are just a waste of time.

Riiiight. And yet westerners, like you, buy all your goods from them. Of course, there is no such thing as being phony in the west. Not at all.

There's no genocide or killings in Quebec for the simple reason that Quebecers do not get violent and riot as Tibetans do. Believe me, we would kill Quebecers in a jiminy if they rised up, we sent our army there in 1970, we didn't shoot them because they behaved and toned down. We are killing and pacifying people every day in Afghanistan, what makes you think we won't kill Quebecers also?

The army was called into Quebec because of the FLQ campaign of bombing, kidnapping and MURDER. The premier of Quebec asked the Federal Government for assistance as the QPP was overwhelmed with mainting law and order. Plus the FLQ and kidnapped and killed a British Diplomat, and if "we" didn't get control of the situation soon, there would be CONSEQUENCES internationally, either from the US or UK.

The fellow they, killed Pierre Laporte was a quebec politican. The diplomat from the UK, James Cross was rescued .

Those were tough times. People like danmand will take no comfort in the fact that I was part of our Martial Law presence back then.

Man it must be fun making this stuff up as you go along?

One can agree or disagree with the US effort in Iraq, I certainly disagree, but
Khadr was not skipping stones when he got shot. At the minimum he was indirectly involved in attacking NATO forces in Afghanistan, (guess for all your platitudes you're 'okay' with women being shot in the back of the head at soccer fields on the basis that their husband doesn't want to return the dowry of 3 goats), and given the few trials so far it would actually appear that albeit slow the US system is bending over backwards to be fair.

Iraq/Iran. Yeah GWB lied.. probably outright. It happens but unlike China his party will suffer a crushing defeat in about 5 months as a result... that can never happen in China.

Khadr was a minor... that is where the conversation starts and ends in most civilized countries.

As for execution in soccer stadiums, is that more or less barbaric then building a facilty SPECIFICALLY for killing people as the US does. (complete with a stage and lighting like a theatre)

As for Iraq, even if the GOP get defeated, is that sufficient punsihment for mass murder and destruction of a country?

Khadr was young and stupid but the conversation ends normally because we don't want Johnny to go jail for 10 years for joy riding in a stolen car. A minor who is determined to be a terrorist martyr should not be considered in the same light as the basis for differential treatment. The idea of the child soldier speaks to children not a teen. It is simply hiding behind arbitrary semantics to suggest that a 15 year old does not have the ability to reason that what he is doing.

As I said I while I am anti-death penalty I have no issue with the US utilizing it. If the will of the people was to stop it then it would be stopped. This is not true in countries under Islamic law such as the Taliban rule. The comparison is childish on every level.

Regarding Iraq? Is it punishment enough? Probably not but at least there is a mechanism to make a change, unlike what will be happening in Tibet until the Chinese successfully perform a cultural genocide.

If you're going to be an apologist you need firmer ground.

quite simply put

the only real difference between china and north america is that...if they decided to take us on..they would win hands down. They would swarm this continent and slit our throats faster than we would be able to jump out of our LaZyboys, turn off our TV's, or put down our X boxes. The opening drummer routine sorta crystallized that reality for me.

Archie, Archie Bunker is that you?

There are many jealous disgruntled people that resent Chinas emergence as a world power. The lyrics to Hail Britania go: hail Britania, Britania rules the waves, we shall never be slaves. Britain was a world leader before the United states took over that tittle in the 20th century. Now the Chinese will be leaders in the 21st century.
