Why is there a One China policy for decades? Taiwan has always been part of China, they have never declared independence. China will just blockade Taiwan. I doubt it will be much of a hot war. The Chinese can establish a blockade far out to sea. The planes and ships will just stop coming. 95% are Han chinese which I believe were the defeated Chinese Nationalist that went there with Chiang Kai-Shek after they were defeated by the commies.
The One China Policy is exactly the reason you don’t want China dictating world terms. They have compromised world organizations to shut out Taiwan, even though Taiwan is already a de facto country. Actually, UN Resolution 2758 only acknowledges Beijing’s claim but says nothing about agreeing with it. Also, from what I’ve read and heard, CKS was a tyrant and committed many atrocities amongst the Taiwanese people. He was an illegitimate government, much like the CCP.

As for a blockade, that is an act of war. Given Taiwan’s importance to the global economy, global technology and its strategic point within the first island chain, you don’t think Pacific allies will step in. Plus, the CCP will lose a lot of political face by trying to strangle an independent country. All those ships trying to blockade Taiwan will be sitting at the bottom of the Pacific.

Also, I’m still having quite a chuckle at someone who thinks secret police stations are there just to help with driver’s license. How gullible lol.

I don't mind a framework for investment from China if it meets our interests. The problem is we spend the last 10 years booting them out to please our US masters. Now it looks like we will need their partnership if we are gonna have a car industry.
You always seem to cross-circuit thought.

Help me understand how China helps the Canadian car industry. The Chinese do not want your autos or your manufactured goods.

A very flippant post.

China isn't North Korea.
They are no more a threat than the US and if I can go out on a limb, are more of a threat today than the US.
The entire world does business with them.
Including us.
Culture and language are not a problem.
We have lots of people to people ties and we have citizens that understand these things very well already.
You should ask the Australians about whatever you're romanticizing bout Chinese relations.

Enemy? They are our second largest trading partner they are an acceptable replacement once our top trading partner has gone mental.
I think the only thing Canada offers the Chinese that they want is natural resources. There are countless posts here that can't wrap their brains around the fungibility of commodities. In other words, the Chinese will buy commodities at the world price including freight from whoever. They will buy energy from Iran and Russia. They will buy Russian grains. I did a perusal of shipping distances and I believe the Persian Gulf is a lot closer to Chinese ports than Vancouver.

Hold on, Earp. Are you suggesting that China only buys commodities that it wants from Canada and only then at an attractive and reasonable price??!!.......

That's a revelation to me. Absolutely.

Those are internal. When did China last attack a foreign nation.
The CCP has fought with India, Vietnam and South Korea. They invaded and annexed Tibet. I believe currently China has militarized their borders with India and Vietnam. This not to mention international waters in the South China Sea.

Even if one actually believes Taiwan is dispensable, I would take the word of the Japanese, the Filipinos, the Indians and the Vietnamese over someone on social media who can't keep his thoughts straight.

I believe there was a lot more specifics in my post.

I have said here that Canada should be selling natural resources to China. It's just that Canada's geography is a challenge in competition to other providers. Then there is the matter that I raised here about why haven't you built out the infrastructure to supply China. You do realize Japan is also a big importer of natural resources.

No offense but some members act like they had this big revelation to supply China. Earth to Les Habitants.........China has been sucking up commodities for over forty years.

We should worry about the present threat from the United States, than worry about a hypothetical threat from China if we were to strengthen business relations.

At least we can agree that china is not clean and the US hasnt had the best foreign policy track record.

But the track record of the CCP since its inception until present in my estimation is far worse. People who have not lived there can not possibly know the brutality of that regime.
We hear bits, like the Muslim concentration camps.

The only country that can actually pose an actually threat to Canada is really the USA. No one else can mount a real attack over any of the three oceans with a real chance of success.
A relatively small population trying to defend a very large land mass. Russia or China could bite off pieces of Canada with relative ease. I think most sensible people know what prevents that from happening.

Thats a loong time ago, yes China has strong borders, there have been centauries of invasions of China, if your country bordered on North Korea, Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam. would you not have heavily defended borders? Taiwan will be allowed to develop on its own if it does not declare independence.

I see a future scenario where with advanced global warming, Canada cedes a large portion of the Northwest Territories/ Nunuvut to China after large portions of that country have become uninhabitable because of climate change and pollution. This leads to Canadian prosperity for about five years, until the Chinese become the largest ethnic group in Canada. Then things get a whole lot worse

@Shaquille Oatmeal:

I'm going to put you on the spot.

I'm looking for a straight 'yes or no' response to the following question:

Do you actually sincerely believe the opinions that you post in the Politics forum, or do you just enjoy playing devil's advocate, for the purpose of argument, debate and/ or trolling?
