Two are in custody and two more are on the run after an armed suspect carjacked a truck Friday evening and fled with the family’s 8-year-old child still inside.
The drama unfolded just after 7 p.m. Friday at a condo complex on Brickstone Mews off Burnhamthorpe Rd., one street west of Confederation Pwky. near Square One.
Peel police Const. Akhil Mooken told media at the scene that investigators with central robbery and the tactical unit were attempting to arrest four men in connection with a series of GTA financial and pharmacy robberies when one of the culprits opened fire at police.
Officers reported returned fire in order to protect themselves, Mooken said.
After ramming a police car with his own vehicle, one of the suspects then carjacked a pickup truck, pulling out the driver and three passengers before fleeing with an eight-year-old girl still inside.
Officers immediately pursued the truck, stopping after the suspect physically tossed the child from the vehicle.
She suffered no serious injuries, Mooken said, and was reunited with her family.
The vehicle was located a short time later near Eglinton Ave. and Creditview Rd.
A second suspect fled the scene on foot, and police managed to arrest two more — one lead away in handcuffs and the other reportedly by Peel EMS.
The York Regional Police helicopter was called in to help search for the outstanding suspects, both of whom managed to escape.
Martin Eret captured the moments immediately after the carjacking on video, showing the truck’s shocked and frantic occupants as the truck sped away.
Eret told the Sun he was on his balcony when he heard three loud gunshots coming from a parking garage entrance just below his unit.
Police cars soon surrounded the garage entrance.
Less than 10 minutes later, Eret saw a black truck emerge from a second garage entrance.
“The truck stopped, pushed out 3 or 4 adults who were quickly surrounded by police, and left,” he said.
Eret’s video shows the truck’s distraught occupants being detained by officers while the truck — closely pursued by police — sped west along Burnamthorpe.
A man is seen begging officers to follow the truck, saying his daughter was still inside.
