I'm starting to pick the game up. Any suggestions on a good book or two to help?

I remember having a great Chess book on clever traps and tricks. I'd suggest something like that. You may still lose a bunch of games at first but it will make your games and wins a lot more exciting when you pull off a gutsy and flashy strategy. :)

it should help keep you going until you get good.

Study all the openings by reading books that list games. Play those games out on a chess board and see why they are good openings.

There really are limited number of good openings.

First 7 moves basically sets the pace of the game.

The whole objective is to control the centre 4 squares of the board.

Don't leave any pieces unprotected.

Chess is like an army of men that must work as a unit to be successful.

Thats all the advice I can give. Played for 33 years. Have played in the Toronto Chess league for many of those.

Anyways, good luck with the game. I have given it up now for Texas Holdem.

1)Get a membership to chessclub.com (Internet Chess Club). There is a one week trial, and a yearly membership fee after that. But it's worth it.

Books I recommend for beginners:

Idiot's guide to chess
Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess
Logical Chess Move By Move

It's not an easy game to master at all, you need a lot of hard work, but it's a fun game.

In the laboratory.
These are four books that I found to be helpful and fun. Over the years, I've found myself going back to them time and again.

'Modern Chess Openings' by Walter Korn
'Chess: 5334 Problems, Combinations, and Games' by Laszlo Polgar
'My Best Games of Chess 1905-1930' by S.G. Tartakower
'My System' by Aron Nimzowitsch
