A bunch of nuts..

Since 2016, parole boards have recommended five times that Van Houten be freed from prison. Then-Gov. Jerry Brown and Newsom have blocked her parole four times. The fifth recommendation came last November and remains under procedural review.

Van Houten, 72, was 19 when she and other Manson followers fatally stabbed Los Angeles grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, in August 1969

SAN FRANCISCO — The California Supreme Court has denied a potential bid for freedom by Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten following Gov. Gavin Newsom's rejection of her parole.

The court on Wednesday refused to hear Van Houten's appeal of a lower court ruling last December that denied her petition for a review.

That petition challenged what it termed a denial of due process by Newsom in reversing a 2020 parole board recommendation. It also said Newsom had refused to provide documents indicating when the board referred the case to him and argued that there was a "strong possibility"" that he exceeded a 30-day time limit for review.

An email to Van Houten's attorney, Rich Pfeiffer, seeking comment wasn't immediately returned Thursday night.

Van Houten, 72, is serving a life sentence for helping Manson and other cult members kill Los Angeles grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, in August 1969. She was 19 when she and other followers fatally stabbed the LaBiancas and smeared their blood on the walls.

The slayings came the day after other Manson followers, but not Van Houten, killed pregnant actress Sharon Tate and four others.

In 2020, the parole panel recommended that Van Houten be freed from prison, saying that she "does not pose an unreasonable risk to public safety" and had shown remorse for her crimes. Newsom, however reversed the decision, saying she did pose an "unreasonable danger" if released.

Since 2016, parole boards have recommended five times that Van Houten be freed from prison. Then-Gov. Jerry Brown and Newsom have blocked her parole four times. The fifth recommendation came last November and remains under procedural review.

Jay Leno used to wisecrack about Charlie Manson coming up for another parole hearing. Did he really think he was going to get out? Preening in front of the mirror. "how's this tie? does it look too "busy ?" "
Ya. fuckem. die in jail.
How is it Lynette Squeaky Fromme kept getting out? First the Manson family and then trying to assassinate Gerald Ford. Yet she still got out.

Once these people have killed, what makes anyone think there should be an expiry date on their sentence? Other than their own expiry date.

Leslie has lived a lot longer than the wife and mother she butchered to death in 1969. Like all the Manson family killers she was originally sentenced to death but her sentence was commuted to life in prison after California abolished the death penalty in 1972.
She already got her break.

Let her rot.

No California governor will approve parol for any controversial murderer. It would be political suicide.

Exactly. Manson killers are way too notorious to be paroled, even some 50 years later. No governor will approve any of the them being released on his watch. They pretty much terrorized Los Angeles in summer 1969 with their senseless and brutal slayings.
Killing a pregnant Hollywood starlet didn't help either.

Didn't help indeed. Without Sharon Tate the murders would have been a sound bite on the local News. Terrorize LA? ...

Did you read Helter Skelter? After the murders the city was indeed terrorized. Sales of guns, alarm systems and guard dogs went way up.
The fact that 2 households were targeted over a single weekend, in 2 different parts of town with no real connection between the 2 sets of victims, suggested that these were random killings and that anyone could be next. The city was gripped by fear.
When Charlie & Gang were caught, their convictions were preordained. There was no way the justice system could have acquitted these maniacs with their wild-eyed babbling leader who made no secret of the fact that he loved scaring society. A not guilty verdict would have been a political fiasco for the judge, DA, Mayor and Governor.

Read it yourself. The conviction was very much in doubt until they got somebody to flip. They nearly had Susan Atkins but she flipped, then flopped. Kasabian nailed an otherwise doubtful case (certainly with respect to Manson himself).
As for LA being in panic, that's mostly hype, Bugliosi inflating his own importance and pumping book sales. Yes some of those who could afford it spent higher on security - hardly being "gripped by fear" Most of the fear came from News at 11...
