This may sound like a strange question, but does anyone know if it is possible to take a car by ferry over to centre island and drive around? If not, what is the best way to get around it as it is pretty big?

I’ve canoed around the islands. If you're interested in that alternative, there is a place in harbour front you can rent them from. A canoe lets you see some parts you cannot easily walk to but I think that walking is a good way to get around the islands.

Anyway, I cannot really see why someone would want to go to what is basically a park and drive around it. Does that not defeat the purpose of going to a park? However, to each his own.

Yes, it is a strange question. The answer is "no." You cannot take a car there. You can get around by bicycle or quadricycle that you can rent there.

You can also walk. It is not that big.

20 years ago or so, I took the ferry to Ward's Island with my dad delivering some equipment to go onto the island. We had to prove we had business on the island first to warrant taking the vehicle ferry over there. The ferry's automobile transport is for commercial interests only and not for public use.

Actually it is quite big to walk around the whole Island. My reason for asking is because I know there are people who live there, and they must be able to take there car over in order to do their shopping and such. Also if you look at a map you can see roads on the Island, so I was wondering if you can take a car there. Now I know.

I would suggest you take the Hanlan point ferry. It is a short walk from the dock to the beach where you will find several hot rods parked and waiting to take you for a ride 'round the island' or perhaps 'round the world'.

Perhaps you might even meet my friend Linda. He is a wonderful tour guide.

Yes, we do it every year for special island events. Even special permission to drive across island airport runway.

Or Kayak. My buddies often do that as part of their training.

Oh John, what a sheltered life you have lived. The entire island is City Park, and no private cars are allowed, even for the residents (who live on Ward's and Algonquin; Centre, the other small islets and Hanlan's being home-free, so to speak) Some islanders do keep vehicles on the mainland, mostly because they're needed for work, but being car-free is one of the attractions of living there. Bikes and wagons get the schlepping done at home, and TTC, taxis AutoShare and friends do cityside. Commercial stuff can be trucked over by prior arrangement.

To walk from Hanlan's at the extreme west to Ward's at the extreme east is about the same as from honest Ed's to the Distillery, and way more pleasant. No big deal. Of course if you stick to Centre, which is all you've mentioned, you're talking about an area bout the size of the CNE, and it even has rides!

But one of the advantages of leaving your car outta the picture is you don't have to retrace your route to get back to where you parked. The ferries go to and from Ward's, Centre and Hanlans so you can go home from whichever you happen to be on when you tire. Sadly though, even though your destination may be one of the less-popular ones, you'll have to endure one big line, swollen by CentreVille folks, to get on.

Give it a try, you can live w/o your car.
