Just remember when you're shopping, to calculate the cost per year for your comfort. The next one's not likely to last any longer. At 12 yrs old, it’s reached the end of its life. And newer units are more efficient.
Good luck.
when my unit was ten years old it needed a new capacitor and my guy charged me about $100 all in for the house callI'm surprised and disappointed to learn that the life of a central air conditioner is only 12 years. I only use the unit about 2 months every year. Anyway, I couldn't stand the heat and humidity and called the original installer to fix. He said he had to replace a capacitor. No big deal. For a "no big deal" I was shocked at the price he charged.
Really? My Lennox is 20 years old and never needed service. This year, we had Enercare look at it and the told us that it was working perfectly. However, they wanted us to replace it because it was 'old', even though it is working as efficiently as a new one.At 12 yrs old, it’s reached the end of its life. And newer units are more efficient.
Good luck.
Lennox be like the Tyson of a/c & heating - good for the full round and moreReally? My Lennox is 20 years old and never needed service...
Mine died last year, good thing I know a guy who knows a guy, it was just the capacitor too. Simple cheap fix. Imagine how many dishonest repair men take advantage of the unsuspecting and you end up buying a new unit long before you need one.when my unit was ten years old it needed a new capacitor and my guy charged me about $100 all in for the house call
"Also, any machine made in the last 20 years is much less durable than older machines. That is why I will never willing surrender my 35 year old GE refrigerator.
Mine was leaking at the time.. If the top of the casing of the capacitor is bulged then this may be but not necessarily an indication that it had stopped functioning.
I've noticed this too. It just means they're in high demand and doing great business. Good time fora young person to get into trades. It is virtually impossible nowaday to find a tradesperson willing to come to the house for less than $200. Earlier this Summer I called 5 roofers and 4 of them didn't even bother to return my call. The one that did call back said his minimum is $500.
If the AC fan is spinning slow and will not go to full speed, the compressor may be attempting to start but cuts out then it is likely the capacitor. Even if this is not the problem it is a good time to change the capacitor before it totally gives out.Mine was leaking at the time.
The old fridges are not as energy efficient as the new models but the energy required to manufacture a new machine must be considered, plus the cost to replace a fridge every 5 -10 years.Yes likely better quality not near as energy efficient.
Funny, the technician who looked at my 20 year old Lennox told me that it was about as efficient as the new units. Efficiency for furnaces and air conditioners has not improved much over the last 20 to 25 years, according to someone I know who does energy audits.Yes likely better quality not near as energy efficient.
what do you mean by quit? Quit cooling or quit running? Mine is 20 YO had it recharged about 2 years agoAnybody service their own central air conditioner? My 12 year old unit quit 2 days ago.
