I really don't think we should always return criticism with whataboutism. Sure, the PC could be/are hypocritical regarding this, but let's focus on the issue her. Did Trudeau make her a Parliamentary Secretary specifically for the optics of having a female POC in the role? Is sort of sounds like it.
Now, we're getting her side of the story, so there are obvious things that just might be her POV. But, if she really only had three official trips that only involved dealing with black people, that does sound like tokenism.
As I've said before, I'm a Liberal supporter, but Trudeau is...well...annoying and the I find the ethical lapses very problematic. I like the idea of putting more women into positions of power in the government, more minorities. I think that is reflective of Canada, and would be great for them to smash any glass ceilings. But to promote them just for show is infuriating. Lord knows I've worked with some incredibly competent, driven women who were much better than their male counterparts, yet they didn't get the promotion.
I'll argue against this. While she was a rookie, she wasn't a backbencher. Being a parliamentary secretary to the PM is a big fucking deal. I can imagine her sitting in cabinet meetings and her ideas being ignored. If it is as she says, then she was surly a token for Trudeau to look like he had strong women and POC in cabinet. But, if he ignored them or marginalized them, what's the point? Is Trudeau a hypocrite? Maybe. It feels like he is the more this shit comes out.
