The BBC reports that the infamous death camp of the Nazi era is falling on hard times!
Why don't they just pull it down and build a monument to the innocent victims
and those who survived? The world should never forget the terrible events that occurred there! The video still brings a chill to the spine.....

The camp is the monument. I hope it never gets torn down. It should be there to remind mankind of what we are capable of and let it never happen again...

Yeah....I guess you're right! The camp itself (IF they can preserve it!) is a dramatic testament to 'Man's terrible inhumanity to Man'....the voices of the innocents who were systematically slaughtered there cries out from the ruins. Lets all hope that it NEVER happens again.

Perhaps there needs to be an international contribution to cover the growing preservation costs, rather than leaving it to Poland alone!

walking through the gas chambers... looking into the ovens... seeing a small pile of the human hair they used to make pillows... walking along the train tracks... looking up at "arbeit macht frei"...
no monument can possibly replace that

Ditto. No matter what the camp should stay. Nothing brings home the message like the real thing, and that message needs to seen to be believed.

Pictures in a magazine and newsreel footage really can't convey the enormity of the horror. To stand outside the gates, see the chimneys, feel the oppressive air... It's impossible to experience that place and not come away a changed man.

No way a concrete/glass/whatever monument would have nearly the impact that the actual buildings would.

The German government needs to step up here and fund it properly.

Maybe Israel needs to step up with some cash.
If no one else will preserve it, Israel will come up the funding to do so.

Israel pours a lot of money into keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive (i.e. Yad Vashem). There's no way way they would allow the single most poignant testament to the validity of the Holocaust disappear.

That said, I think the Germans will find the money to keep it going. They take Holocaust remembrance pretty seriously over there.

Auschwitz is Poland not Germany, any money out of Germany to help keep the place running is private money. Half the budget of this place comes from the Polish government and the other half comes from visitors. It get over a million visitors a year and makes money on tours offered. Simple up the fee to visit, local pay this much and foreign visitors pay this much. I have never been one to save something (MLG, Fenway Park) just for history's sake, things are well documented now, but this is a different symbol, it represents to evil that man can do and what happens when the world get complacent with an inhuman regime.

I say demolish the evil site. Nothing is gained from keeping it. There are
plenty of films.

Although I'm not sure that you haven't been there..............

I'd say go there first. Watching it and actually being there, being told stories and imagining are two totally different things.

I haven't been there, but in school at an impressionable age we were shown
lots of footage from there.
Why keep a monument to evil?

To remind people that it can happen, it did happen, and should never happen again.
Why only that case of evil, I then ask?
