A fuel filter can clog up on the first fill up or never in its lifetime. It all depends what crap is in the fuel. After 10 years you can be sure that it is not as it was when new. Even if it does not clog up, the fuel filter can leak if there is rust on the metal case or if it is plastic it can leak due to many years of expansion and contraction due to cold and heat. It is cheap insurance to change it after all these years. For a few bucks, it can save you from getting stuck out on the road. You know it always happens at the worse possible time.
If it is leaking gas it is now a safety / fire issue. But will the tech catch it when he does the etest? If he sees it leaking gas the test can't be done because of unsafe vehicle. Effect emmission no.
No but if it plugs up car won't run.
10 yrs is an awful long time to go without changing a fuel filter.
Check vehicle manual which will show how often and when it should be changed.

Yeah, I think they called it an emission filter. Then they saw that my Air and Cabin Filter required changing but those were much cheaper. I will check my bill.
Fuel filter problems are impossible to diagnose. You could end up with stalling, poor performance, or a variety of other things. It's not as simple as a dead battery (which is easy to diagnose.. dead car, won't start, no voltage in battery).
You could end up spending hundreds of $ chasing down a bad fuel filter (I've seen the bill even reach $1000 on a german car). I would change it at 8yrs (max) and you should be fine. I have seen sensors replaced, fuel treatments, fuel injection parts replaced, and other stuff...... and then the fuel filter gets changed and the problem is solved!

the fuel filter can effect emmisions tests as it changes the amount of available fuel if the car runs lean it can trip the test machine. The filter should be changed semi regularly, check you owners manual, it will give you the mileage, I expect you are over that now. It is simple enough to change, 2 wrenches a pair of pliers and a basin to catch the fuel. It will be located on the chassis rail.
$150? Had my fuel filter changed last week for $30 (1999 Ford Ranger) - sometimes them newfangled furrin cars just ain't worth it.
What is an Emission Filter?
It's right beside the muffler filter that can found behind the light filters
more mileage dependant then years. It basically depends on how much gas has passed through the thing and how dirty the gas was. It will give you some warnings before it fails, but it can cause lean running which could be very harmful on a turbo engine..it could cause higher emissions..but at that point your car would be running pretty poorly.

She had a 387 cui motor and 4x4x2
She got 13 miles to the gallon city or highway, she loved her gas
Well I changed the fuel filter 3 times at a cost of around 20 buck (every 20,000 miles)
Problem was each and every time I changed it the fuel pump blew bringing my cost to 350 bucks
That sucked

The owners manual doesn't mention fuel filter. Replacing seems unnecessary, took it to crappy tire, perhaps they're luring..
