Car break-ins

Maybe it's the wrong title for this thread since the car isn't technically being broken into.... It is not my car - it belongs to someone who I live with. Both times she thinks she accidentally left the doors unlocked.

It's happened twice in the last two months, the last time being a couple of nights ago. Nothing has been stolen but it is apparent that someone was in the car because things were moved/messed around and both times the glove compartment was open and obviously been looked through.

I should mention that the car is parked in a driveway of a house in a residential neighbourhood.

It's probably just some punk-ass kids looking for cash/cellphones, etc. Worthy of a call to the police or not worth it? I told her that she should at least let the police know.

I used to drive a beater, never locked it.
Figured that it would be better to have someone look through it (there was never anything of value left in it) then to break a window.
Every few months I'd have to clean the car up a bit after someone looked around, but never lost anything of value.
Next car I bought was better, locked it and had to replace a broken window once, which was way more of a pain then just cleaning up the car.

But if nothing is stolen there isn't much to report, break and enter?
Just tell her to lock her car or make sure she doesn't keep anything of value there.

Don't leave any charging wires or headset ones if you and/or your friend aren't using bluetooth devices. I'm guilty of leaving them around myself, so I'm a hypocrite there and of course it depends on the 'hood you're parking in YO!

Based on your previous posts I think I know the area where you live. It is a very dangerous high crime neighborhood. This is not your father's neighborhood. A lot of changes in that area for the past 10 years or so and almost all of it bad. Be careful out there.

I know. :( There are more bad people in my neighbourhood than when I was growing up. Fortunately, most of them are terrified of me.

You could always leave the glove box (and any other compartments) open so there's no temptation to open the door and rustle through it.

It's called a crime of opportunity, youths or older criminal types just try every vehicle on a street and when they find the unlocked ones, they rifle through it looking for change or electronics that are easily removed. It happened to me once and I always lock my vehicle, but this one time I was preoccupied...anyways, lesson learned. I've seen the tracks in the snow and you can see that the bastards have tried every vehicle on the street.

without any evidence cops cant do anything but take your report. 2 things you can do: install a security camera and a motion sensor light into the driveway. these are powerful deterrents for criminals (especialy the light). with that evidence available if something happens in the future the police can action it, and usually they are familiar with the perps that live in the area. ie: had my glass smashed and luckily nothing in car for the guy to take but he was caught on video and was known to police, they booked him.

Guys, be careful what you leave in the car. One of my female neighbors had her camera in her car stolen. Apparently, it contained images of a sensitive nature. She then posted a note on the other window (the one that wasn't broken) asking please keep the camera but return the memory card.

It is not your imagination. There are people wandering around in the middle of the night checking car doors to see if they are open so that they can go in and rummage around. I suspect teenagers with nothing to do. The best thing to do is install a alarm system. When any door is opened I have a 15 second delay to start my car to deactivate the system. Otherwise the siren goes off.
