should we bring it back in these tough economic times- it would help reduce spending on new prisons

I'd like to see lower case punishment brought in as well for those who never use their goddamn shift key when posting.

No, capital punishment is barbaric. What I WOULD agree to, is to give anyone convicted of murder and serving a life sentence (I know that varies from 15-25 years in Canada) a suicide pill. That way, if they want to check out, they can do so with their own hand and at their own time of choosing. This will save money, be an act of mercy and will not stain our society with inflicting death. I would imagine at some point in prison everyone would feel suicidal. If I were there I would probably use the pill on day 1.

No, we shouldn't.

1) It's not cheaper. A plethora of studies have shown that executing an inmate is far more expensive that incarcerating them, once the court costs are factored into it.

2) It gives the state the right to kill us when we break one of their rules. Some of those rules are rather specious, and rules change. I don't like that, and nor should anyone.

3) Plenty of innocent people have been killed by the state due to a flawed system, racism, flawed evidence etc etc

4) It doesn't reduce crime. In fact, states with the dealth penalty are typically more violent and crime-ridden

5) Its hypocritical; "Don't kill...or we will kill you

6) Steve Earle is against it, and Steve Earle is really cool

What a great idea, after years of appeals and the one person a year who may actually be executed, we'd all be living the high life.

Prison builders will want to lock you up for saying that.

if there an email was sent to everyone saying- it costs $40K per year to imprison a sex offender or we can kill him this afternoon for $1.20. vote for a or b.

I wonder what the results would be.

We have capital punishment in Florida, and also spend a lot on prisons. Only 69 inmates have been executed in FL in the past 31 years (since executions resumed in 1979), so it isn't used that much. It is more of a feel good factor for the general state population knowing that the worst of the worst can get it handed to them, rather than a cost saving measure.
