Most big box retailers have dedicated loss prevention staff who are responsible for handling shoplifters. Regular employees are usually under strict orders not to confront shoplifters because they are not trained in how to make a legal citizen's arrest, they are not equipped with any protective equipment and they don't have a security licence or extra liability insurance that anyone working security would have. I get that people don't like petty criminals, but stepping in when you don't know what you are doing causes more problems then it solves. Also if you are an employee of a big box store remember that your corporate masters will kick you to the curb in a second if it suits there interests so ask your self is it really worth risking your safety just to save some mega corp a few bucks in stolen merchandise?
