important tournament? guys- take an objective look at things... it's important to the kids playing hoping to some day crack NHL rosters, but even at this level they don't all 'make it'... it's important to the scouts both volunteer and paid, perhaps it's important to corporations that choose to sponsor the event... but, it definitely is not the Olympic games, not a Superbowl or even the Grey Cup for that matter. It's an at best amateur tournament where the refereeing is 2nd tier, the skill level is very unbalanced- even on the individual teams and too much hope is put on these players to turn out as 'stars' in the nhl. Oftentimes, the heroes of these games never go on to brilliant NHL careers.

in fact some will be playing on the other channel right now... a la Spengler cup that gets almost no media attention until it is over.

Someone used the word "pure" to describe the tournament. Its about as "pure" as NCAA basketball.

From the players side you seem to have more passion and enthusiasm and need to play well in these overexposed games (compared to there other contests) for the future livelihoods . And on the business side, you have a bunch of athletes who are being used greedily by media and associations, who realize they have to play with passion and enthusiasm in this environment as it impacts there future careers significantly.

I enjoy both forms of entertainment these athletes provide in both events. But neither are "pure".

Why should the Spengler Cup get any attention. It doens't represent anything.

The Olympics = The Best Players from each Country

The WJC = The Best Under 20 Players.

Spengler Cup = 20 Random Guiys from Canada who play in Europ, who are the best???? Who are playing some club teams. I don't see the point. Its a second class event hosted by a second class TV network.

2nd tier is being kind...

...I've seen better officiating at beer league games. Last nights game, US vs Latvia, A US player hits an opponent..was called a head shot...5 mins and a game....and they get the wrong guy and throw him out....what bush league did they find these refs at??

You're in the minority scouser. I always love watching this tourney because its exciting hockey. That's because the players give a full effort everytime knowing that they are representing their countries and playing for a pro contract.

Blowouts aside there is always great competition between the likes of Canada, Russia and the US. Slovakia finished 4th last year and they are a team that can surprise.

- Do you like junior hockey ?
Absolutely. Much more consistent enthusiam in play typically in a more intimate venue. Kind of like taking NHL playoff hockey and putting it into a community rink.

- Outside of this event do you follow junior hockey ?
Absolutely. Only a handful of OHL arenas left to visit in person.

- Do you watch, look forward to this event every year ?
Yes but the hype is a bit overbearing but this is one of the only things that TSN has created on its own. It's not something they borrow from ESPN or repackage from some other programming source. It is something they created, nutured and turned into what it is today ... For good or bad.

- Do you think Canada will win their sixth in a row?
Yes. I think they are definitely one of the favourites but it won't be easy again.

Canada might be the heavy favourite but they rarely run away with the tournament.
I every now and then get jaded by the success as well and wonder about the tournament but then, when you look back at the past five wins, you have shoot outs, a golden goal and a game tying goal with less about 5 sec left so it's not been easy except for the lockout superteam of 2005.

I just wish the Maguirre's and McKenzie's of the world would remember the little piece they've run on Slaney and stop equating a great junior player into guaranteed success. Slaney and many, many more players remind us that this tournament may be the pinnacle of many of these young men's playing careers. Certainly representing your country is nothing to sneeze at but NHL success is not in most of these guys cards and on air TSN personalities should stop hyping it as such becaue they should know better!

Isn't it interesting that at the 20th year of coverage, you are starting to hear more and more Canadian players state that they grew up watching the tournament? If anything, this tournament and being on this team means a lot to these guys.

It is also interesting to go back to that first tournament and think about why TSN really chose to broadcast this tournament. Of course creating programming that draws tons of advertising revenue is an obvious reason but why did they think people would watch this tournament? Patriotism? Likely. Love for hockey? Possibly. But if you recall the time frame and the hockey landscape, one of the biggest reasons they chose that tournament was the hype around one of the greatest portrayed villains in hockey ... Eric Lindros. This was an opportunity to pimp a player that was labelled the next hockey god and not have to put themselves in the situation of broadcasting OHL games on a regular basis.

Well said. Couldn't have said it better.

The thing you have to remember about Pierre Maguire is that he's a hockey pimp and you can expect him to super exaggerate everything. Take him with a grain of salt.

That being said, he's passionate about hockey. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, especially for a TV announcer. And you can't dispute that he definitely knows his material.

Is he over the top at times? Yes. But you know what? So what. I'd rather have someone passionate than some US announcer who sounds like he's giving the play by play for grass growing.

Another solid win for Canada last night and the shutout streak continues. A little tougher opposition than Latvia and I thought Canada looked a little sloppier than in their first game. Which is a good thing because it gives the team plenty of time to tighten up their game.

Although I think Canada is in the weaker division, at least the games are set up properly for Canada with each successive opponent being tougher than the previous. Granted, it's likely going to be a pretty big jump from Slovakia to USA.

Go Canada!

Canada, 8 - 2 over Slovakia, pretty impressive. The US game will be a lot more competitive. Can't wait for that game.

OMG!!! Talk about heart palpitations!!! Canada did not deserve to win against the US but somehow pulled a rabbit out of the hat in the last half of the third. Sloppy play, countless turnovers, and two short-handed goals would have sunk any other team but the Canadians somehow pulled out a win.

For those who say there's no competition in the World Juniors, have some crow pie! :D

GO CANADA GO!!!
