Russia’s demographics are collapsing fast. There population in their 20’s (army age) will be in their 30’s soon… and the birth rates are very low. They don’t have a replacement generation. Everyone in Putin’s circle see’s this war as a must win if Russia is to survive.

Demographics are collapsing in much of Europe, in particular Eastern Europe and in West Taiwan, Japan, KPop Korea and Taiwan.
Also to quote Iron Man to Loki, not a good plan.
As Russia was under no threat from it's neighbors the war was not a must to win.
I know there is this one commentator on the youtube who goes on about Russia, demographics and how it must control the routes of entry, but he is obsessed with his hobby horse and it blinds him to everything else. He also has a record of making nearer term predictions and removing videos when they inevitably don't come true.
No. Not true at all about his predictions. Lol. He has written 3 best sellers…. Most of his stuff is in them. He simply goes by data.
And I agree the war was a dumb idea. I am just saying that is not how they see it.

He has consistently campaigned against corruption in Russia and against Putin in particular. He has been a political prisoner since returning to Russia in 2021, has been nominated for and won several human rights prizes, and has denounced the Russian invasion of Ukraine. If we're comparing him to western style politicians, I'd say he's better than many, if not most, in Canada and the US.
He quotes actual data, he doesn't make shit up like some people. However from reality he goes off in weird directions.
Apparently his videos that make short term predictions have a tendency to go missing, so I have heard. Maybe it's true, maybe it's off. I have not heard anything about his books, but based on his videos, I will take a pass. Although I'll admit they could be interesting, and I am sure some of his points are valid.
He used to to work for Strathford…. A geopolitical company in Houston. George Friedman owns it. George came on my radar about a decade or so ago. Talked geopolitics without getting into left or bullshit. Smart guy… but not a smooth talker.
Zeihan just flat out tells you what he was wrong about. He does not pretend to have a crystal ball. Circumstances can change… or people can use the data to make changes. In 95, the prediction with our population would have grim… but, we then took on immigration and did not collapse. I suppose some people would look back back at the 95 assessment and say “see! They were totally wrong predicting we would collapse”.
In any case. Since I found Zeihan, I look at the world a little different now. It’s a new perspective is all.
But he right about Russia. It’s in his 95 book that war would happen around 2020-21 based on their population stats alone. He also made that speech to several corporations who hired him (a 2017 era video is in my YouTube faves. It’s 90 mins long and covered a lot!)
