I don’t know why but I can’t get on to my laptop, I used it on Friday night with no problems, I have to enter a 4 digit passcode and then all it does is show the loading icon, in the corner of the laptop it shows that I’m not connected to wifi, I’ve done searches on my phone but I can’t do anything that it recommends because I can’t log into the laptop, my phone and printer are connected to wifi, I’m in a basement apartment and I hope that it’s just a loose wire upstairs, does anyone have any suggestions on what I can try? I don’t have the money to buy a new laptop right now, I came here first before I message my landlord upstairs

Wifi is not needed to logon to computer.

Have you tried hitting the power button to power off computer then power it back on again to restart it?

Not sure I quite understand your problem. Do you have a problem logging into your laptop, which is not a wifi problem or logging onto the internet which can be?

I’m having problems getting into the laptop, I have to enter the 4 digit passcode and the main screen is supposed to come on but I’m not getting a main screen

Try to research which function key to press on your brand of computer while pressing the power button, as you may be able to "hard reset" your computer.

You should not lose any data if you are pressing the right keys.

Here is how it works on my ASUS.

1. Unplug power adaptor.
2. Hold down power button for 60 seconds.
3. Reconnect power adaptor.
4. Press and hold F9 key.
5. Turn computer back on.
6. Release F9 key when boot screen appears.

Obviously you were able to post your problem on terb somehow, despite your computer not booting.

If you post the brand of your computer maybe someone here can look up what you have to do to hard reset yours.

MAKE SURE YOU'RE NOT DOING A "TOTAL FACTORY RESET" AS YOU MAY LOSE STORED DATA IF IT IS NOT BACKED UP EXTERNALLY!

Your mother board maybe fried, I kinda had a similar problem a while ago. One morning I tried signing on to my lap top, screen was blank tried numerous times with the power button restart. Took it into the Apple Store to look into it. Turns out my mother board was fried, they told me I could get a new board, but it could take a few days, I decided to buy a new lap top.
My guess was that it over heated, since I used to have it under the duvet with me nightly while I slept . Now I make sure it is away from my bed when I go to sleep.

The vents are in the bottom. I prop it up about an inch to help it fan out the heat.

I’m using ChatGPT now for like 3 hours, nothing is working and I feel like I’m just wasting time
Did you try the "hard reset" as in my post #6?

If not, you can try "system restore", and if that doesn't work even try "factory reset", but in factory reset you will lose most of your data that isn't backed up externally.

Otherwise I suggest taking it in to a reputable computer repair shop.

I tried the hard reset with nothing working
I would do a factory restore if it helps but I can’t get past the login screen

Sorry to hear that. I guess it's time to take it to the shop.

Small consolation: If you're running Windows 10, and your computer can't handle Windows 11, it's time to upgrade anyways, as Microsoft security support for Windows 10 ends this October, with a possible one year extension to October 2026 for $30 U.S., but that's it if you're running the Windows 10 Home version.

Because my old ASUS Windows 10 computer is old and unable to upgrade to Windows 11, and was starting to give me low memory warnings and running like a pig, I bit the bullet and went to Best Buy.

I found an ASUS Vivabook on sale from $1,299 down to $999, 16" display, 32 gigs of fast RAM (i probably only needed 16 gigs), 1tb SSD, AMD Ryzen 7, and AMD Radeon graphics. Not a gaming computer, but more than enough for my needs. And I don't imagine it will be a problem to upgrade to Windows 12 when that comes along...

Also, they had lots of less expensive laptops that should be more than sufficient for basic everyday needs.

I don’t have the money for a new laptop, I don’t use it that often
I feel like chat gpt is a run around, I’m doing the same thing it’s suggesting and for 4 hours nothing is solved

I'm no expert, but if none of the above suggestions from us or Chat gpt are working it's time for the shop.

Hopefully its not dead.

Wishing you good luck...

All you had to do was try the rebooting advice or reformatting it (not sure how that works with Win 10 and such these days I haven't done that in decades) otherwise yeah toss it if you can't afford to get it repaired or even a used one. Chat GPT imo is a joke. It seems like you couldn't even get into safe mode to do much. Shitty. At least you don't use it often.
4 hours later I’m doing a reset now

Canada computers has an amazing repair centre. Very reasonable price. Many times they didn't even charge me on stuff like what you're experiencing. If they find a quick fix you'll be in and out in no time with very little $ spent.

I'd take it into a repair shop it may cost you $60-$80 but that's far less frustrating than spending hours trying to fix the problem. My current laptop is over 6 years old and its doing a slow death. Unlike you I'm on mine every day.
