Run into that problem before with support fom companies that outsource their support in India. Most recently with large Canadian Bank ( I couldn't access on line banking). I spent several hours on the phone over a period of several days. They blamed me, my system, my browser, my settings before finally admitting that a glitch had developped in their system.... I never got the same person twice so I had to go through a lenghty description of the problem everytime. and the worse is that you can't understand them. I finally requested that they put a non accented English speaking person on the line. They seemed offended by that but finally complied, and the problem was resolved in a few minutes.

They do that to save a few bucks, at the expenses of the customers. That's fine in theory as long as you do not have to deal with them.

I used to build systems myself, but now it is just as cheap and faster to go to a local shop. You can specify what you want; it's fast, and if something happens they attend to it. In the end it is not more expensive and you get a better quality product.

I buy from the SAME person all the time. No matter what I need. (photo paper is different) He knows me. I support his store.

I know enough to know when it's a dumb deal.

I pay less than DELL and MDG for my systems with better quality MB's and RAM.

Drives come with their own warranty. Bought through my guy...if it packs in..and under warranty he replaces it. He DEALS with Maxtor or whoever..I don't have to.

Buy clones..buy from a local. You'll often find you can pick up the phone and ask a "dumb question" and get an answer right away on programs you're using.

I'm really commited now to buying from local dealers. It's really good to see the low advertised prices from the On Line types...but service generally sucks when you have a major problem. I have 7 computers running in my biz, each one important. I've learned how to become my own IT dept and still know where to get help when I'm stumped.

If it's one system..go to a local who has been there for more than 5 years. That says it all. If they lasted that long, they're doing things right in a very competitive market. Keep in mind the makup on systems is really low.

If you want a screamer..be prepared to pay extra! The faster you want it the more it will cost. But you won't have it in the shop all the time!

Buy at Best Buy or Futureshop and DO buy the instore extended warranty because I bet anything you buy will need service in the next 2-3 years. I have been buying computers since 1981 so I have a little knowledge, plus I work with the stupid things every single day professionally. Stay away from MDG (repeat, stay away) Good Luck.
Best Buy and Future Shop are the biggest rip off that exist. As far as the extended warranty is concerned, do not buy it. It is a waste of money. That's how they make their money. They advertise a low price and they nail you with the extended warranty, so you end up paying more for an under par product. With modern computers or any electronics for that matter, if anything is going to fail, it will happen in the first 2 weeks 99% of the time, and then it is covered by the standard warranty.

Raydeon is right. Future shop machines are usually crap. Outdated technology or a lower class of CPU chip. Intel has a whack of P4 chips. Not all of them are good or expensive.

NEVER buy the extended warranty. All the parts in the machine come with a warranty and it's cheaper to replace the parts than buying the warranty. A new drive is only 80 bucks!

Anyone who has worked there can tell you they get a higher commission on the warranty sale then the item itself. The reason, nothing comes back and they fight every claim tooth and nail.

My local computer mom and pa store has a reputation for installing used parts and selling them as new. You just don't know these days.

Speaking of which my hard drive irrepairably crashed this morning. Fcuk.

I think he was being cynical about buying the warranty because of the crap they sell you, he was implying you'd need it. :)

Thanks...

Appreciate all the input... and to those that p.m.'d me - thanks, but no thanks.

Should have stated that I am not interested in building my own, or getting someone to build it for me. I just want to go to a store, bring it home in a box, unpack it & plug it in.

So it's between DELL & MDG... unless there are any fans of HP or another "big name brand"...

Some of the dells have been loosing motherboards, due to a bad cap on them. This problem is not limmited to dell only. I would say MDG but get high end parts in it. I believe you have that choice

Just go to oine of the PC village locations.

You can pick your the system based on your needs/intended useage.

The price is right and they back up what they sell 100%.

I've bought quite a few systems from them. They've all worked fine our of the box and no problems yet with any of them.

Another Plane Of Existence
As I said earlier... Canada Computers, Logic, and PC Gate.

Stay the hell away from MDG (check out www.redflagdeals.com and do a search on'em and you'll see why).

But if hafta choose between the two, Dell is much friggin better!
