Buying Cigarettes at Max's: Drivers License gets swiped?

I was buying cigarettes at a Max's convenience and the person asked to see my ID. I showed him my drivers license and he wanted me to hand it over to him so he could scan it.

I put up a big fuss, but was in a rush and had to smoke, so I relented. He said that the card reader he had behind the counter was for detecting fake licenses. I still feel a little sketched out, even a week after this had happened. Did this guy just sell my identity to Al Quaeda?

I think you got scammed

It is probably nothing but I would not be feeling too comfortable. That seems like overkill in checking ID...do you ever see the LCBO or bars do that. You might want to ask someone in by-law enforcement if this occurs in other stores.

Good luck

Actually I have had my license swiped at the casino in Niagra before, although it was a few years ago now.

Probably the person at the counter thought you looked young, and wanted to card you.

I still get carded whenever I visit Fallsview. I get a laugh when they ask me for ID...

Lottery terminals have a swipe spot to verify the ID. If it is not valid the terminal notes that to the clerk.
The clerk selling the smokes is on the hook big time if they make a mistake. So yes many stores or sellers of smokes are being very careful.

After all they have been made the keepers of the Evil tobacco products that are sold legally

Try not to blame them as society has basically made them the ones responsible for other peoples smoking problems

Stores are now the Gestapo of tobacco

We are way to fucking obsessed with smoking in North America
