Whatever you decide in terms of breed, be sure to get pet insurance for it as soon as you get it... Vet bills are skyrocketing in price. I've done the math with premiums paid vs. bills covered, and I'm already way ahead after only three years of guardianship.

(By the way, I like how you used the term "guardian" instead of owner or parent... Much better term to use IMHO.)

Go to a shelter. The dogs and cats there are so eager to be adopted they will be all over you. I got my cat from a shelter four years ago. When we first met she was purring and rubbing against me, so I took her home. She is still affectionate and low maintenance. Just stand there and see which dog or puppy is all over you. That's the one to adopt. Worked for me.

Timely advice as I am considering same. Could you say what avg. Cost of premiums would be, as I am unfamiliar with this type of insurance.
