ok ok ...I know before I get flamed, I shouldn't have been speeding.

I was up north, wide open road. Got caught doing 142 in an 80km highway.

Ironic part is I was driving for all of 5 minutes, and just accelerated right into a trap!

So I had the pleasure of experiencing these new over 50 speeding laws.

7 day suspension of liscence, impounded car.

Court ruling is this week as to what fine I should get. Any advice from anyone who's been here? Should I get representation? Just go in and hope for the best and plead my case?

Any commentary welcome....

The offense and the penalties are serious enough to justify a real lawyer,
to represent you in court.

Chill out, the guy knows he fucked up. He made a mistake and on the grand scheme of mistakes list, I consider it minor. It was an 80 zone, not a 40 zone...

All I have to say is...FUCK Cam Wooley. I hate him.

No you shouldn't have been speeding that bad, but up north there are hi-ways with 90 km/h limit. And they have NOBODY on them, these are the best for testing your speed.

But seriously man, that is too bad, my buddy got a ticket for 49 km/h over...he was so lucky he didn't get 50 over. He used a traffic defense lawyer and they got it reduced to 20 over which is a shit ton less than the fine he was going to pay.

Also, I would definitely fight it, because even if you show up to court, you may have a chance the cop won't show and also part of the fine is including court services, so usually it gets knocked down just for that.

I guess you have never worked at a Insurance Company or know anyone who has died in a high speed crash?

I believe the fine is around a grand typically as the judge is free to impose whatever fine he likes. And 6 points too I think.

If you haven't any other demerit points on your license, you will survive this, however, what your insurance company chooses to do may be a different story. They could raise your rates, or they could not care. It varies.

If your record is clear, and you can handle losing the points, I don't know if I would hire a lawyer because his fees are going to be way more than your fine. I think I'd go into court and try to explain my way out of in the hopes of getting a reduced sentence - which is all your lawyer would get you anyway.

If you can get it knocked down to 4 points, your insurance will not go up and your fine will be around $300 bucks I believe. Quite liveable. If however, you are on the verge of losing your license and this will put you over the top, then you would want to hire a lawyer.

Just go in and hope for the best...if you have a reasonably good record the judge will reduce it significantly. If you don't have a good record fight it, before you go in to court they will make a deal with you and reduce it.

ps. slow the fuck down

Sure it happens, but I firmly believe that guys who run reds (and there are lots of them) are the worst of the worst in terms of driving offenses. It's easy to do 150 on the 401 and if you are stone sober, wide awake, and your vehicle is proper and you are in control, I don't believe you to be a menace.

Red light runners

Racers bobbing in and out of traffic

tail gaters

Road Rage Kings

Too slow

Not checking blind spots

IMHO, these are all far more dangerous than a guy in full control doing 150 on the 401 when conditions permit.

Agreed completely. I tend to always speed on the 401/QEW, but it's always with a lot of room in front of me in a single lane not weaving in and out.

Sure. Still doing +50km is not a minor offense. I am sure you can find many things that are worse. Dude is in some serious shit.

I have driven those roads as well. I have learned just to set the cruise and arrive alive. With some of the 80km roads you never know when some dude might pull out of his driveway in his pickup, transport, tractor or ...

I'm not defending reckless speeders - the guys who drive like lunatics bobbing in and out of traffic and cutting people off, etc.

But as I stated, there are far worse offences out there which never seen to get caught. I guess it's easy for the cops and the courts to quantify speeding - you're on radar doing 150 in a 100 zone. End of story.

To me, the bobbers and weavers are tied with red light runners for the worst kind of offender and the kind of behaviour I WISH the cops would crack down on.

Oh, and add to the list the goofs who drive pieces of shit. We've all seen them. Smoke pouring out the exhaust, brake pads down to the rivets, tail pipes hanging off, no brake lights, shocks so worn out the rear tires bounce off the road with every bump that moron hits.

Now that's dangerous.

OP dude was doing 62km over. Close to 2x the posted limit (hence the handle great_times2 I guess). It is not a trivial thing.
