+1 for 7/11
You can get a phone, sim and minutes.
Or just the sim and minutes, if you have an old phone.
All with cash. No paper trail. No ID.

I don't think he was necessarily talking about SW's. I think he meant drug dealing or whatever. I think he's just saying in general it's not like LE can't trace them.
Thank you, you are absolutely correct.

I was indeed referring to ANYTHING, whatever that might be, that attracted the attention of LE. A burner is not untraceable. The telecoms will be able to locate it through triangulation, even if its shut off. If you're using an "old phone" that was your day to day driver in the past, it will have ID numbers associated with it (I'm sure) those numbers will be linked to you when you bought the phone back when. (Though you could get around that by buying a new burner phone with CASH.)

BUT there's no way to get around the locate. (Unless you use it once in the middle of the Eaton Centre and throw it in the garbage. Better yet, the middle of High Park. )

Recall that episode of Breaking Bad. /s

The doctor is in
4 days ago, got a simcard from The Dollar Store for $4, activated, had a choice between $15/month (100 minutes) and $25/month (unlimited minutes). Provided fake name, fake addresses, provided VISA gift card # for renewal. Similar process from TELUS (assigned koodoo), didn't have to provide ID. All this assumes you already have a phone of course.
I used to be with Petrocan and do my top ups online. They had an issue with their backend server and refused to fix it, so I left. Presently looking for a new burner phone, but no 7/11 in my area unfortunately. I was thinking about Chtr, but the guy at the kiosk was adamant on activating everything himself instead of letting me do it at home online. I didn’t want to give him my info, so I balked. So you know if they sell SIM cards there? That way I could just buy one and put it into one of my old iPhones and use that. Lucky mobile looks pretty good too, but I don’t want to get roped into a monthly plan. I prefer pay as you go. Does Koo doo and Telus sell sims for prepaid phones too without you having to divulge any personal details? Failing that, I could also order a Chtr sim on Amazon or something… Not sure what the best move is…

telus (koodo) does have pay as you go. 1st time, set it up all by myself. 2nd time they wanted to set it up so it was ‘a gift’ thus was able to provide a fake name

What do you think would be the safest burner phone or old phone with sim? Not to tech savvy but heard something about old phone and same IP address?

Everything here depends on how you want to use it.

If you want extreme privacy then buy a new pay as you go phone with cash at Best Buy and use 7-11 or whatever as stated above. This way the phones EMEI number is fresh.

If you just want a burner phone to leave in your car so the SO doesnt see i you can use an old phone - the SO isnt going to be linking the EMEI and stuff like that. Tell her the phone in the car is unregistered and just used for 911 calls if she ever find it.

Another option is to use a separate app like My Sudo to use as your second number. My sudo lets you have separate personalities with different numbers you can can delete and change at will.

Best thing I think is to hide it in plain site. I have a family plan with the SO and decided I didnt want to pay for 2 phones - so I cancelled my phone line and bought a Data only SIM - told the call centre it was for my tablet but it works great in my phone. So now I have an old phone with data only with MySudo as my main number and have multiple number options as and when I need them. And I only pay $10 a month for the 50gb of data and $10 a month for mySudo for 3 phone numbers. My phone is old so to save battery I never have Location services on. Again hiding in plain site. Genuine reasons for using mySudo and not having GPS tracking on my phone. Also "as my phone is a POS" the battery dies at the worst moments so she knows that sometimes I'm just not available...

Only issue with mySudo is it needs Android8 or above. I bough an old phone at Value Village thinking it would be great. Works nice - way better than my current phone but its Android 6. So currently not using it. But I might if I find another phone app I like - I will just switch the sim and presto.

So Ive been looking at all these options. And I'm looking for a private data only option. It seems that the 7-11 option doesnt include data.

Does anyone know where I can buy a data only sim? Or a sim with a good data plan? Also it would be good if the sim didnt cost $10 a month but just lasted as long as the fund lasted/

I remember years ago when cell phones first came out you could get a plan and the length up was based on the so you could buy $50 topup and it would last for a year. It seems as if everything these days just lasts 30 days.

So. Does anyone know of a data sim? and a sim that doesnt need to be topped up every month...

Just wanted to update this thread. Recently went to europe where they have backpackers e-sims so travellers can sign up - something like $25 fr 50gb that lasts a a month. So I wondered does anyone know if the same exists for any travllers coming to canada?

Once LE is involved burner phones can easily be linked to your own cell phone. If the burner and your own phone both ping simultaneously from the same towers as you move through the city, you might as well duct tape them together as you make your 'secret' calls.

Get a sim card and pay as you go voucher from Rogers.
Pay cash, decline activation at the store
Call the number on the receipt to activate

If you are really paranoid then each sim and phone need to be one time use. But if you are just trying to hide from your wife that's excessive.

Yeah - if you just have a burner so the wife cant go through text messages then dont need to worry about seperate pings.

But if you are using a burner to be safe then you keep it always off - sim out - or in an RFID bag.

Then when you leave home.you turn off your regular phone - put it in another shielded bag then drive 5 miles or however long before starting up the burner. Do the reverse when you head home.

Try to do the switch in different areas every time so they dont always ping in the same place.

Thats the only way of keeping them seperate.

I have bought phones at Value village - an old Samsung - it worked nicely but the android was a bit old so not all apps would work.

Kijiji I just bought a Google Pixel 6 for $200 cash. Id say Kijiji is your best bet.

But you can also buy phones at Best Buy, Radio Shack, Walmart etc... Burner phone is basically any phone that doesnt come with a contract.

And even though I bought a google pixel I'm a big fan of not using Google - I set it up as an ungoogled phone. Obv Google is big on tracking and you can use Google and a gmail account you dont use for anyone else.. but why bother.... I installed an independent firewall on my phone and its amazing how many times the operating system tries to phone home.

Also you dont have to get your apps from Google anymore. Search for F-Droid APK and install that. Then you can use the F-Droid repository to install open source versions of the popular apps. If you want any apps you would normally get on the play store just do a search (I use duckduckgo browser) for the app and then APK - for example search "glasswire apk" and then you can download and install the APK (basically the app) without telling Big Brother.

Also I only use my sim for data and use MySudo for texting and calling.

Its not technically a burner - as its my regular phone that I use day to day - and I use a data only tablet sim from one of the big carriers but for all intents and purposes if I wanted to set up a burner this is exactly how Id do it. The only difference is I would use a cash sim from somewhere - and keep the phone in a sheilded bag if I was anywhere close to home.

Again all depends on how paranoid you want to be.

Anyhoo hope that helps - gotta go to work - that safe aint gonna crack itself if you know what I mean... ;)
