The only REAL musician in the band was Mike Nesmith the others "faked it" until they had some lessons on how to play and perform.
Nesmith went on to a career in music writing and producing. His momn invented WHITE OUT!!!! aka Liquid Paper.

Mickey Dolenz was a much better singer and sang lead on their best songs, didn't like Davy's Cockney voice at all.
Plus he was short. :eyebrows:

The two were both child actors and had been on television and stage many times before the Monkees.

Some of the music done by The Monkees was ok - but definately not in the superstardom range as the Beatles or stones, Zepplin etc....

But hey Davy Jones - RIP man!

The Beatles were big fans of the Monkees television show. They even invited them to hang out with them while in England. Mike Nesmith can be seen in the film made during the recording of "A Day In The Life". When John Lennon was asked to compare the Monkees to the Beatles, he said it would be more appropriate to compare the Monkees to the Marx Brothers.

RIP Davy.

Trivia: David Bowie (born David Jones) changed his name so he wasn't confused with the guy from the Monkees.

Forgotten that Stephen Stills auditioned to be one of the Monkees in 1966 but was turned down. His hair wasn't good enough. Much better for him as it turned out.

Indeed!
Stephen Stills went on to greatness with CSN and CSN&Y in the late 60s.

Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) is a folk rock supergroup made up of David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, also known as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY) when joined by occasional fourth member Neil Young. They are noted for their intricate vocal harmonies, often tumultuous interpersonal relationships, political activism, and lasting influence on music and culture. All four members of CSNY have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, though Young's multiple inductions were for work not involving the group.

Don't forget Buffalo Springfield. Some great stuff, including For What It's Worth (Something Happening Here), and Bluebird. Classic music that still holds up. The Monkees never impressed me, not even as a little kid.
