Anthony Bourdain is taking his show "Parts Unknown" to Newfoundland and tweeted about it. He used the term "Newfie" in a promotional tweet and now there are reports that "Newfoundlanders" are outraged. Really? I guess the few who complained don't watch his show or are familiar with how he integrates into the local communities wherever he does his shows. Anyway, apparently the term "Newfie" is now highly offensive.

I really doubt Newfoundlanders or Newfies are offended.

Every Newfie I met was proud and used it as a badge of honour. Some of the friendliest Canadians I ever met. Great people.
My experience too. When I first read about the outrage I initially thought it was a joke. I’m guessing that when the episode airs there will be nothing but pride with how Bourdain will showcase the region and the people.
The tourism people are quite confident that those small clusters of brightly coloured homes in isolated hamlets is all reason people need to come to Newfoundland. come to the rock. drive for 4 hours. nothing to see or do until you get to "the corner" look at the four houses. take a picture. Drive back 4 hours to a diner for a coffee.

In oz we nickname everything and everyone...except Canadians lol. Poms, honkies, kiwis, banana benders, swans, Yanks (although the more derogatory term for them is Seppo, comes from Yank, crank, septic tank; aka the yanks are full of shit), etc etc. Giving people nicknames to a working class aussie is a sign that you are accepted into the group...thus a good thing...
I've never heard of this before. Newfies are some of the nicest, most hard working folks I've met. They also have a saucy sense of humour.
