These symptoms do not seem OS specific. Are you using a different web browser than your old system?

What do you mean youtube loads slow? The video buffering speed?

Dell's come with a whole pile of CRAP pre-loaded on the system. (i.e. google desktop, IE toolbars, Norton AV). Get rid of it all !!

You can also turn off many of the useless Vista features (i.e. Aero interface, UAC) which will make a difference in performance.

Vista without SP1 is about 20% slower than XP. With SP1 it's about 5-10% slower on games and on-par with most business and Internet apps (according to recent tests at MaximumPC).

Your slow youtube and pauses for webpages are classic AV (especially Norton) symptoms. Dump whatever it is and go Avast! or AVG. I've also dumped Windows Defender (does it actually do anything - I've never seen an alert?).

In terms of replacing Vista with XP - only if your sure you can find all the hardware drivers. Dell has gotten into a terrible habit of not supplying XP drivers for their latest machines. You may have to do some serious hunting.

What are your rigs specs?
What he said....or buy a Mac :D

When I got my Vista machine, I was fortunate to get a Vista CD with it, so I
immidiately reinstalled Vista without the crap. The system has worked fine
reliable and fast.

I had to call up Microsoft and wait/talk for half an hour to get a key.

Okay Mac guys, yea I know you don't have these problems, but you all have little dicks (best insult I can come up with)…edit
Could be. But ours actually work. You did hit the nail dead square about Cadillacs vs Porsches et al., though.

PCs have run like bad Detroit iron ever since IBM belatedly got into personal computers and stuck the world with the whatever OS they could get cobbled up fast to meet a johnny-come-lately market deadline. You do remember DOS, don't you, class? And, because it was IBM-certified, PC buyers stuck with it, ostrich-like, until Gates finally managed to work up an imitation of Mac's GUI that the patent lawyers would sign off on. PCs've caught up a long way, and OSX isn't swiss watch elegant like its predecessors, but I've heard despairing rants like poor Ray's a lot more commonly on the Windows side of the divide.

S'okay, I've used the BMW of computers since way back. I can still sympathize w/ Ray's troubles w/o having experience. But like mine with the Chrysler I bought after years of Japanese and German imports: Coulda been avoided by shopping in the better market to begin with. The best of second class is still second class.

in my pants, where there's a party
Alot of IT guys will say Vista's ok now, because they

-think in terms of relativity to a year ago, when it was a nightmare
-think in terms of a developper, and marvel at the undercarriage.

For many regular users, Vista still sucks, and I, an IT guy, will tell you that none of my computers will ever have Vista on them. The tinkering, although not a big deal for me, takes away from pooning. :D

For 90% of users, Vista is perfectly fine. I wouldn't know about deploying it on a 100 business machines though.

For my part, I barely notice operating systems these days.

Lots dudes here have a deep understanding of technology and to be honest with you any top of the line machine you buy today will be pretty dated six months down the line regardless of manufacturer.

I'd say look at post #5. To make things easier for you I would take your laptop. Drop it on the desk of your IT guy with the following note taped on top.

"Wipe this bitch clean, reformat, re-install XP SP 3 from scratch, disable all built in security. Load up all the device drivers as well as AVG or AVASt, and maybe even ZoneAlarm's free firewall. Test, and hand it back to me. Thank you"

Your machine will feel like you just traded that ol' cadillac for a far spiffier 350Z.

XP Pro comes in both 32 bit and 64 bit version and frankly he will be way better off using a 32 bit XP.

As it stands there is no performance difference between the two, just the added hassle of finding 64 bit drivers and then finding compatible 64 bit software to run on the latter. Actually 32 bit programs run significantly slower on a 64 bit XP.

A 350Z !? This is what you two consider a upper standard. LOL.

It's all show and no go. 0-60 in the mid 5s, 1/4 mile in the mid 14s, skidpad in the mid .8g. There are dozens of cars at a lower price that can waste it. Personally, I think the car looks like it has a fat ass and when driving it, it has no soul. At least the previous generation twin-turbo was a looker and felt better when driven hard.

Now a Porsche Turbo is a suitable upper standard! It will out-perform for many years, unlike it's Ferrari or Lambo running mates.
Well, sure a porsche, ferrari or lambo are upper crust but so is the price. If money is no object then a bugatti veyron eats all others. But hey, what's a cool million for a car right?

If money were no object then anyone could build a lightning fast 'puter with multiple quad core processors, freon cooling, massive storage, etc etc.

Alright everyone settle the fuck down!!! And how did this turn into a Car thread - I dunno?

Few days ago I talked to a guy from India named Suckwinder or something like that (courtesy of Dell)
He seemed to straighten things out. My wireless conection was all fucked up somehow, somewho.
I kept getting a popup saying 'Connect to Broadband' with options; connect, close, etc.... I had to close each time for the webpage to load.

Boy was I angry, but I'm feeling much better now.

This machine loads so quick now. I'm very happy and I'm sorry for the rant
the other day. The Bluray is amazing especially the sound WOW!

I wish Uncle Adolf was her to see me

BTW I still don't have the red lines in terb for my spelling mistakes. SORRY!
