Great music

*Sérgio Mendes, the legendary Brazilian musician, has passed away at the age of 83, leaving behind a rich legacy that spans over six decades. Mendes, who died in Los Angeles, was a central figure in popularizing bossa nova, a jazz-inflected genre of samba, and had a profound influence on music across generations.

Born in Brazil, Mendes began his illustrious career in the 1960s and went on to collaborate with a plethora of music icons. His works saw him unite with major artists like John Legend and the Black Eyed Peas, with whom he re-recorded his classic hit “Mas Que Nada” in 2006.

This collaboration introduced his sound to a new generation and exemplified his ability to merge traditional rhythms with contemporary styles.

Mendes was also known for his collaborations with jazz greats such as Herb Alpert and Cannonball Adderley, further enhancing his reputation in the music industry. His diverse partnerships contributed to his broad appeal, making his music a staple across various genres.

One of Mendes’ most memorable contributions to modern cinema was his 2011 song “Real in Rio,” featured in the animated film Rio. This vibrant track garnered Mendes an Oscar nomination in 2012, cementing his status as not just a music producer but also a creator of revolutionary soundscapes that resonate with audiences of all ages.

Always loved his cool sound. Seriously considered seeing him & his band at Fallsview Casino last year but the dates didn't work for me. I really regret not going now.

LOVE his music! My dad played it at parties at our house in the 60's when I was just a little kid but I loved the smooth sounds and rythym. Especially Mas Que Nada!

Never knew he worked with Herb Alpert. Will listen to some on Spotify today.

What a life and legacy some people have had!

I know I'd be dead already but I really do wish I was born in around 1947-50 to enjoy the timing of the various lifestyles at the appropriate ages. I'm making the best of it but the past decade hasn't held much interest for what *I* like. I especially lament the huge diverging of socializing from in-person to virtual and social media. Enjoying a night out or lunch with a friend is so much more fulfilling that posting and being fed lifestyle pics from wannabe influencers. And with AI, I have a feeling it will only decline further. 🤷‍♂️

But going to enjoy the sunshine out on the water listening to Sergio Mendez!

In 1970, Sérgio Mendes employed a young carpenter to build a music studio in his backyard in Encino. The carpenter was also an aspiring actor. Do you recognize him?
