Heart of Darkness is next on my list.

Almost finished Sanctuary by William Faulkner. 1931 novel set in the Deep South.
Moonshine, brothels, murder and mayhem.

Currently reading The Missing Of The Somme by Geoff Dyer. Dyer visited the battlefields where the battle was fought in 1916, the cemeteries where its dead are buried and the war memorials in England that honor the dead and missing. The book is a lyrical meditation on how a nation honors and remembers its dead soldiers. Well worth reading.

Wow, some of you guys are way too cerebral for me. I like to read to relax and let my brain have a mini vacation.

If you're a fan of Lee Child (Jack Reacher series) and/or Robert B. Parker styles, you should check out a Canadian author, Ian Hamilton' Ava Lee series.
It's not necessary to read them in order, but it does help a bit to follow the characters' development.

I fired God : my life inside--and escape from--the secret world of the independent fundamental Baptist cult
by Zichterman, Jocelyn.

Summary/Review: This book is a compelling memoir and investigation into the Independent Fundamental Baptist church and its shocking history of religious abuse. Jocelyn Zichterman was born, raised, married into, and finally, with her family, fled the Independent Fundamental Baptist church. Founded by the fiery preacher Bob Jones, with several hundred thousand, IFB members are told they must not associate with members of other Baptist denominations and evangelicals, with an emphasis on secrecy, insular marriages within the church, a subservience for women, and unusual child raising practices. In "I Fired God, " Jocelyn Zichterman blows the lid off the IFB's disturbing history, exposing a cult-like atmosphere of corruption, greed, and abuse. Having been initiated into its innermost circles, Zichterman knows that the gentle demeanor America sees in the form of the Duggar clan on "19 Kids and Counting" disguises the truth about the darker side of the church. With written documentation and sources so thorough that law enforcement has used her work as a foundation for criminal prosecutions, Zichterman exposes the IFB with revelations including: The disturbing world of abuse within the IFB and doctors and teachers who cater exclusively to church members and fail to report physical and sexual abuse; The IFB-controlled Bob Jones University, which issues worthless degrees while making vast sums of money for its founders; The way the IFB influences politics on the local, state, and national level, and protects its abusive culture under the constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion. - Publisher.

Question

A question for other readers. Why is it that a book gets high ratings on Amazon, but when i read it i find it mediocre.
For example i read The Relic by by Preston and Child it has a 4.5 stars out of 5 from 1,121 reviewers, but i found it less than stellar. I understand there is some subjectivity from person to person but this is extreme, are the ratings rigged or what? By the way the made a movie out of the book that came out at 1997, that i thought was a bit better than the source material.
Plus i never understood the praise for Stephen King's work? I am not trying to start an argument, just looking for objective answers.
