If you read Ian Fleming's books, Bond is a bit of a moody character. He is devoted to serving his country and the forces of good, but he carries the weight of what he does with him. As a result, he can be withdrawn at times and ultimately quite human. His escape from his line of work is drink, women and gambling.

I've always found that Sean Connery portrayed this the best. Roger Moore added a slickness which made the Bond movies popular in the 70s & 80s I think, but ultimately that wasn't really Bond. I think Pierce Brosnan has done a great job at bringing back the true character of Bond as Ian Fleming created him. Nonetheless, the best was still the original - Sean Connery.

Hey Bard. My 11 year old and I had this exact discussion tonight after we saw a commercial for a James Bond DVD box. It was about a half hour before you posted and it freaked me out when I saw your post. Then I suspected you must have seen the same commercial. Confirm or deny please. I need to know how much karma was involved.

Connery does seem to be running away with this...how about who is the best Steele...Remington Steele...

Ok...maybe not. Always thought it was one of the most under-rated shows of all time, though.

I've heard from diehard bond fans (read all the books) that Timothy Dalton played the most accurate Bond from the books on the screen.

I have to agree with the general consensus, Sean Connery's depiction of James Bond was by far the best. Roger Moore was far too slick and egotistical and every time he raised his eyebrow I kept expecting a halo to appear.

Sean...is number 007

You will have to go back to the early movies - The thick eyelashes and the eye contact he made when he was ready to kill the guys. These were things that the other bond stars cannot duplicate IMHO. They almost made it comical as they read those lines during the killings today.

As an audience, you can tell he means "business" when he stared down a threat or ready to kill. He can also flash the smile for the ladies and flirt with them when needed in a most gentleman-like manner. The others come across like fruit cakes..

Sean Connery without a doubt.
I like Dalton as well, but I think his portrayal was a bit too 'serious' for the audience after years of the fey Roger Moore portrayal. IMO he was a disaster as Bond, always playing it too tongue-in-cheek.

It looks like Sean Connery is running away with this poll, and I can't argue with that since I voted for him too. He was the first, he was the best, and he defined the character. I agree, Roger Moore was too lightweight. I also agree that Timothy Dalton has probably been unjustly maligned. Pierce isn't bad, but still too much of a pretty boy for my taste.

How about a discussion of the best Bond girl? Submitted for your consideration...

Ursula Andress
Honor Blackman
Claudine Auger
Diana Rigg
Jill St. John
Jane Seymour
Barbara Bach
Denise Richards
Halle Berry

My vote would go for Ursula.

My votes for best bond girls ...

Jane Seymour and Diana Riggs ! Both had the "mature" and "sensual" qualities missing in others. And, they can both act too with credits elsewhere. If you look at all the others, they just come and then disappeared.

Halle Berry is a special case, she was at the top of her career when she becomes a Bond girl.
