A powerful car bomb was recently detonated in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The fingers are naturally being pointed at Al-Qaeda.

1) WTF?! What could a bomb in an urban setting accomplish?

2) Assuming it is Al-Qaeda, why? I know that Saudi Arabia is a more moderate Islamic state, but isn't this a case of attacking your own kind?

I hate terrorists. Fuck 'em.

Sigh.

Al-Qaeda is also commited to overthrowing the Saudi monarchy. But they have been reluctant to hit Saudi Arabia too often with bombs because they get most of their support from Saudi citizens. Fortunately (in one sense but ultimately sad) hate knows no boundaries so when these terrorists can't hit other targets they'll look for what they can hit. The killing of Saudi innocents turns more Saudis away from Al-Qaeda and also makes the police more intent on cracking down (usually they kind of turn a blind eye).

Also, they often plant bombs in resisential areas that house foreign workers thus reducing the chance of alienating the Saudis. There are a large number of Philipino workers who also seem to suffer as they are usually in the low rent districts where bombs have been exploded in the past.
