Unfortunately there is a bias within many african/african based cultures (like the Caribbean) where a lighter complexion is called "high" and in some places, social status is tied to it. For example, if a number of people are approaching a doorway, the darker complexioned people give way to the lighter ones. Its a shame, but it happens. Thus the lighter complexioned ladies will wear long sleeves and hats to make sure they sun doesn't darken them further, etc. The bias I see quite regularly, in my experience though living in such cultures, is that the men tend to prefer the lighter complexioned ladies, whereas the ladies don't seem to factor complexion much into their equations when exercising their preferences....i have also heard that in legal brothels in SE Asia (did not partake, lol) - where the ladies, and majority of clients, are asian - the lighter complexioned ladies will cost more than the darker ones.
