I was at the office. It was near my house. In the afternoon on a warm day.

Power went out. Still had land line phones at home and office (PBX with a whack of batteries there.

Wife called. Yes, power out here too.

After no sign of power coming on, I went home in my car.

I was lucky, as I could get there without involving any traffic lights.

Got home, left car in driveway as no garage door opener.

Grabbed and filled 2 clean 5 gallon pails I had in the basement from tap while water pressure lasted.

Put lids on them in the kitchen, as my at the time youngest was 1yo, and on formula.

Moved meat from fridge freezer down to chest freezer in basement.

Tossed 3 sleeping bags over that freezer. It lasted just fine this way until the power came back on.

Got out the camping stove and fueled it before it got dark. Cooked meals just as needed just as we do when camping on back yard picnic table.

Dedicated one toilet for #2's and survived that part of power outage.

Opened the windows as no A/C was happening. We all went to bed early.

Next am still no power so stayed home. Cooked eggs in fry pan, and toast on bbq.
Moved fridge condiments to a camping cooler and then remaining fridge freezer items thawed in that and we ate them up to keep the condiments cooled.
Ate a bunch of reheated canned stuff to mate with what was thawing or already left overs from the fridge.

I walked to the corner store later in the day and bought a few things with cash.
Then and ever since we always keep cash around the house for this sort of event.

Walked to the local creek with a few bucket to bring back water to wash dishes with near the end.
Our power came back after about 23 hours out.

Same here. I keep cash hidden, but I make sure there is a good mix of 5, 10, and 20 dollar bills. Nothing bigger.

Don't normally post but my perspective on this event was rather unique in that I had no clue it had actually happened until over a week later.

I was an Ontario Ranger in Algonquin Park that summer and was on a 5 day excursion into the bush to clear portages when it occurred. Normally we went into North Bay on the weekends but that week we decided to stay in camp, I spent it fishing for Brook Trout on the Amble Du Fond.

It wasn't until the next week when we went into North Bay that I had my first clue something was wrong as there were way more Army trucks broken down on the shoulder of the highway heading out of North Bay than we had previously seen all summer.

It was by pure chance I found out about the blackout when we got to town, I was having a random chat with the guy who was working at a used record store I bought some CDs at when I had mentioned the Army trucks coming out of town. He gave me a sideways look and told me all about the blackout, were it not for that I probably wouldn't have known for months
I remember 100%. I was in the car north of Toronto. Radio went dead. It was actually a great 1-2 days.
