Honestly, no such thing. Squirrels are tenacious little bastards and will eventually find a way into just about anywhere they set their furry little minds on getting into. Just not a whole lot you can do to stop them. You can make it harder for them, but they’ll probably figure it out eventually.

Mount the feeder on a smooth aluminium pole away from trees-they won’t be able to climb it.

You say that, but in actuality, no so much... I have a buddy who was having problems with squirrels at his feeder, so he decided to try a little experiment, try to build the ultimate squirrel-proof feeder. He mounted the feeder on a metal pole away from a tree, greased the pole, and hooked it up to a mild electrical current, so anything that touched the pole would get a little zap. He cleared all branches that went anywhere near the thing. The squirrels still got to it. He has no idea how, but he was walking by the window and sure enough, one of the furry little bastards was perched up there chowing down. Squirrels are goddamn ninjas.

This style has proven very effective over a decade or more, even with overhanging branches the little tree-rats can launch from:

The concept is : Squirrels will get there, no matter what. But their weighyt will close the trap door over the food, so they'll leave hungry and eventually stop trying. Maybe even pass on their wisdom to the next generation. You can adjust the trap-weight to exclude big birds like pigeons as well. And it's sorta fun watching a crowd of sparrows build to the point where they trigger it.

Mounts on a pole or hangs from above. Amazon has it, and if you Google 'bird feed store Toronto' you can find a number of places when you can see and operate one before you buy. And get even more advice.

Add crushed peppers to your bird feed, the hotter the better, it won't bother the birds but it will get the squirrel's attention.

Oblivion
Bird feeders in my neighbour's backyard attracted squirrels and chickmunks, then rats and mice to eat the spilled grain on the ground. Then foxes and coyotes came and a skunk. No opposums yet and raccoons seem uninterested.

Tell him to try this...

This might work, actually, good idea. Birds are immune to capsaicin, but mammals are not, so it should do the trick.

Squirrels gotta eat too.

I leave peanuts out from time to time. What is interesting is that the squirrels have learned that I do this and will now come right to the door and peer through the glass looking for me. They certainly have good memories.

We used to have this “Squirrel Lady” at my old building. She’d go out to the nearby park and leave peanuts for the squirrels. The odd part was how she’d do it, though. She didn’t just go out and toss a bunch of peanuts around. Oh no. She’d spend the better part of the afternoon (and she’d do this almost every day) wandering around individually placing each peanut. One on top of a fence, one inside a little knot in a tree, one on top of the water fountain, etc. Just wandering around painstakingly stashing each one. It was very strange.

It obviously gave her a bit of joy. So good for her.

This worked for me. I regularly leave peanuts and my stale bread out on the back porch and the squirrels totally forgot about the bird feeder.

Agreed...

Raccoons however need to died, died a good death, be flatten by a truck... Raccoons have no useful place on the food chain other than to be made into a coat....
