So I've been watching Billions since the get go and I have to say, this season is the best of the 3. By far.

But I had this conversation recently as to which character has the greater sense of morality (or moral compass as they say in the show).

In season 1, I would have given it hands down to Chuck. He was the guy who used to make dog walkers pick up their dog's shit in the park. Now, quite the opposite. Chuck has proven himself to be capable of just about anything. He's fucked over his father (who is a piece of work in his own right), his co-workers (plural), his best friend (Ira the lawyer who saved his ass even) and recently he set up the good doctor - Dr. Ari Gilbert and pretends like he knows nothing about anything.

Now Bobby on the other hand started out Season 1 as kind of a slimey bankster who would do anything for the sake of a buck (like he kept on trading on 911 making trades shorting stocks that he knew would plummet after 911, etc. In short, he profited large by 911.) Then there was his conspicuous lifestyle which is just way too over the top for 99.99 percent of us to relate to or even want. He even moved to keep a guy who worked for him from receiving cancer treatment that would have prolonged his life, albeit temporarily so the guy would hurry up and die so that he could not testify against him (Bobby).

But the funny thing about Bobby is that he does seem to have more of a moral compass.

If you asked me to trust one or the other, I'd have to pick Bobby. Chuck has proven time and time again that he simply can't be trusted. He will throw anyone under the bus if it serves his purposes. Bobby won't. He seems to have loyalty to a select few, especially those who work for him. Chuck not at all. Chuck is the definition of the worst boss to have. Someone who can't be trusted and won't back up his people.

So, which is it, who has the greater sense of morality?

The crusading attorney Chuck Rhoades or the greedy money obsessed money man who neither builds or creates anything. Just takes a cut.

This was the best scene in Episode 7. (Minute 0:50 or so.)

Bobby has just "beat the rap", he's free to go, he's taken by his trusty sidekick wags to a place that would be every young man's dream. (Beautiful young nubile women in a hot tub free to do whatever he wants, booze, drugs, whatever his heart desires.)

Instead he looks like a man suffering from post traumatic stress. And he probably is. He's been to hell and back. He's been taken to the limit by the system and he's managed (at least for now) to escape intact. But at what cost? He almost went to jail, it could have been for a long time. Hell, he was arrested and he was in jail albeit only briefly. He has realized that his wife (ex wife?) does not care at all about him, it's all about the money with her. He's just dollar signs to her. Probably that's all he ever was. She doesn't protect him, or have his back. She's taken his sons that he adores away from him, threatened to, and probably still will, move to California. His life is not want he envisioned. He is the kid from the neighbourhood who made a huge success of himself and yet, he has nothing. Here he is in a hot tub of nubile gazelle like naked females who are giving him the porn star and the girl friend experience all at the same time, but it only crushes his soul that much more to know that it's meaningless. They only want the money. Just like his wife. It brings him no joy and he never dreamed he would be where he is this far down the road. For a moment, I almost thought he would slip beneath the waves.

Definitely Bobby Axelrod. I worked on Wall Street and Bay Street. Though we're labelled as greedy bastards who are depraved, unconscionable it is the people that regulate us and the court system who has a cast of characters which are even worse...

Don't fuck with Chuck's wife .................. Enjoy your night alone ....
She definitely makes a great Dominatrix.

And there's definitely a love triangle thing happening there. Chuck just has to slip and Bobby will be there. She is his (Bobby's) soul-mate.

I'm waiting until I can watch this show from the beginning, is it on Netflix? And who is Maggie Siff (Sons of Anarchy) married to?

Btw, with a name like Axelrod, morality does not become you.

I only watched a few episodes of the first season, but then the plot twists and some of the characterizations became a little too cartoonish, so stopped. Also - David Constable playing the taskmaster for a group of hedge fund traders - I kept picturing Gale Boetticher - which ruined it. If the third season is better, might start watching again. I had the opinion that the show was how an outsider (who has never worked on a desk or even in the industry) would write about Wall Street. Much prefer stuff written by people like Michael Lewis - who have spent time on a desk. The one thing the show gets right is the trading mentality for Axe (eg: his instinct to trade off of 9/11). It's not so much a question of morality - it's just that a good trader will have instincts that react faster than emotion. I started my career on the Treasury desk of a US Primary dealer in the late 80's and traded various instruments for well over a decade (still in the industry but now in a different function - more suited to my "senior citizen" status, LOL). So some things are automatic and you never quite lose the mentality of thinking 24/7 how an event, ANY event, will affect your book. Emotions have no place in trading. You never really lose this and it can seem odd to people who don't understand where it's coming from.

Not on Netflix. I watch it on Crave TV.

Maggie Siff is married to Chuck Rhoades played by Paul Giomatti. Both Damien Lewis and Paul Giomatti (especially so) do an amazing job.

Been watching this since the beginning ... love the show and this season 3 is great. I'm a Finance guy, seen and heard way too much shit go down in the capital markets, doesn't matter if it's here, NY, Chicago, London etc. and to see it being portrayed on tv in this manner it's ... entertaining to say the least.

I voted Chuck but it was close. But you have to love Bobby !!!

Btw, this is cooler talk on Wall Street.

Chuck's slide into depravity is truly awesome. Bobby's just an oversized hustler. When looking for a babysitter, I'd definitely hire Chuck. Looking to make some cash, I'd go with Bobby, providing I'm insulated.
