Any recommendations for really great sushi restaurants. Yukiguni in Niagara Falls is my choice.

For fresh fish I like Christie at Cachet and Sherry at Honeygirls in Toronto! For restaurants, I like SushiTime off of Queen and SushiInn in Yorkville.

This has been covered before, however, the best Sushi in Toronto is at Kaji, without a doubt.

After that, there are several other top places - Hiro, Blowfish, etc.

But the Number One spot in Toronto, (I've even heard it said Canada) is Kaji on the Queensway in Etobicoke.

Definitely agree, but you can get out of Sushi Inn for $20 bucks easy, while it's not hard to spend as much as ten times that at Kaji. They will however make you believe it was worth it.

Most sushi places have the same suppliers, therefor usually the same initial freshness, if they use the fish in a timely manner. The fish has usually previously been frozen to assure freshness, difficult to get fresh never frozen fish inland in Toronto suitable for sushi. Most people including so called experts, cannot tell if the fish has been frozen or is fresh. My Japanese associates say that most "Japanese sushi restaurants " in the GTA are an insult to the Japanese as many of them are Korean or Chinese operated, however, one Japanese lady I know from Hokkaido says that the best place for sushi is Ichiban near Empress Walk which is ironically, Korean owned and staffed! My favorite sushi places are Hiro, Cafe Michi, Hama, Ichiban and Zen in that order in the GTA, However my all time favorite place is Tojo's in Vancouver. There is a chinese place called, Wasabi on Highway 7, that has all you can eat salmon sashemi, or at least they had it a few months ago, not sure how they can make a profit, unless it is from their accompanying buffet.

I second that, although certainly not for the budget minded.

Tojo is definately one of the best. On the local scene, Blowfish is pretty good but a bit pricy. Dont waist your money at Ki (overpriced - moreso that Blowfish) and sub-standard (read: standard for Toronto - sorry but its true) in quality. Personally I think Hiro is so over-rated and the service is piss-poor. For the best combination of price and quality (plus they hire real Japanese girls, not Chinese passing themselves off as Japanese - almost sounds like they run incall too) is Numi Sushi on Queen St E in the Beach. Bit of a haul to get too but great sushi.

I've been to Kaji too and it was excellent. But I am an east ender and for freshness and value I enjoy Sushi Delight on Danforth. Value is incredible and they have recently renovated and the decor seems more Japanese then diner now.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Hiro on king st. One of the best in Canada. Small, nice decor, great service. Its a bit pricey but its worth it.

Katsura, has profession wait staff, Cantonese speaking if that matters, good service though, better than my favorite Japanese restaurants that I previously mentioned which have temporary fly by night Japanese ESL students . The best service that I have seen, was at Tojo's in Vancouver, professional wait staff par excellence, amazing combinations and permutations of Japanese food, check out their website, www.tojos.com

I second the above for sushi. Hama ( the one at Pacific Place right ? ) has limited menu item sashami-wise, but they are always very fresh and pieces are large. I eat at Ichiban (2 blocks north of and off Yonge and Shepperd ) about once a month. Very good variety, fresh, for the price it's quite good and I don't really care if it's Korean run.

Why you mofo's have to spill beans on Katsura, please reveal no more :D

I like Sushi Island on College. All you can eat for a bit under $20 and while not suited for the sushi purist it does have a lot of interesting rolls etc. Good for if you are taking people who might be vegetarian as they have enough veggie stuff that I have actually sat down to just eat vegetarian stuff without getting bored and still leaving many dishes untried. Is the place fine dining? No. Just good food, creative menu, reasonable price and very central location (close to plenty of bars for after dinner).

However, I will add that the interior design is pleasant enough rather than being say a cheap dive.

Best sushi is KAJI then Hashimoto. Friend in the restaurant business told me that Kaji gets the first pick off the airplane when fish comes to Toronto, then Hashimoto. Apparently there is a sushi restaurant in Newmarket, Japanese chef owned which is reviewed excellent, on Davis Drive, don't know the name, sorry.

Just a side note it's easy to get a table for lunch on a weekday but dinner in general you'd be wise to make a reservation at Sushi Island.

The place on Queen East, is that the one on the south side, just about a block east of Woodbine?

If so, I've been there and agree, it's pretty good.

Chef and staff is in fact Japanese.
