Well, it's just about that wonderful time of year for sports when the Big Four are all in action. MLB is in the playoffs, NBA and NHL are starting up, and the NFL is in full swing. With that, typically the networks show sports movies in primetime up the wazoo.
So, here's a list of the best films for each Big Four sport IMHO. Note that documentaries (ex. Hoop Dreams) or TV movies (ex. Backfield In Motion) were not considered. Only theatre releases are judged.
Here we go ...
Hockey - The least covered of the Four kind of like the respect it gets.
1st Place: Slap Shot
*Kind of cliche but still the best to watch. "I felt shame."
Runner-up/Guilty Pleasure: Youngblood
*Rob Lowe's ass and Keanu's first movie appearance ... Come on!
*Just kidding. The best part of this movie is it comes off like an American's interpretation of not only the OHL but small town Canada. Enuff said.
*Too boot ... I had such a crush on Cynthia Gibb. Best arse ever!!!
Baseball - America's past time has been well represented.
1st Place: Bull Durham
*"Yeah, I told him." You have to think that every time you see a solo shot.
Runner-up/Guilty Pleasure: Major League
*Wesley Snipes before Blade. Charlie Sheen before the hookers. It's all good.
Basketball - The catalog was added too during the 90's no doubt.
1st Place: Hoosiers
*Dripping with cheeze but still I think a great story. Probably my favourite sports film of all-time!
Runner-up/Guilty Pleasure: White Men Can't Jump
*Again, Wesley Snipes before Blade. Woody Harrelson before hemp.
Football - The biggest of the Big Four, every level of football has been covered from Pop Warner (Little Giants), high school (Varsity Blues), college (Necessary Roughness), pro (Heaven Can Wait) and even prison (both Longest Yard's).
1st Place: Friday Night Lights
*Remember the Titans and Any Given Sunday were both close but you have to go with the one that sticks with the truth and the good guys lose.
Runner-up/Guilty Pleasure: The Program
*Michigan wins a big game. Only in the movies.
Opinions????
