What are the best socks for everyday general use with runners?
Icebreaker Merino wool socks are the most comfortable socks I've ever worn. They have all sorts of different styles, thickness and with different amounts of padding. They're stitched differently for L & R feet and are virtually odor free. My feet don't sweat like they do in cotton or synthetic socks. Cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I wore a pair every day for 2 weeks straight and they still didn't smell. They're a little pricy but they sometimes go on sale for 50% off. It's all I own now. You have to try them to believe it. Worth every penny.

Another vote for Icebreaker. I find them to be very versatile and wear them for daily use, running, trekking, etc

Add another vote for merino wool. Available in different weights for different seasons.
A close second is a pair of bamboo fiber infused with charcoal I picked up on vacation in the Caribbean. Very nice.

I bought a bunch of ( made in USA ) FarWest wool and Farwest Alpaca socks last year on sale at Marks. Not thick , really warm . ( warmer than Marks boot socks) Wear well . They fit small , really snug. I hand wash in cool/lukewarm water. Very happy with the purchases.

I saw an item on Russian army recruits being instructed to wear foot wraps instead of socks. My first reaction was that it was stupid. Until I found it is actually smart. Wicking effect prevents foot fungal problems in summer when your feet get sweaty. Socks get wet. feet get fungus. I used to do this when I had a problem. Problem solved.
