Well since a few people have mentioned Dylan ( would not classify him as rock except in the broadest terms ) then it must be equally valid to mention Muddy Waters .

Otherwise :
Hendrix
Clapton
Stones
Pink Floyd

Early Bird Results - Keep 'em coming

Here is an early bird tally:

Beatles 9
Pink Floyd 8
Zeppelin 7
The Who 6
The Stones 6
Elvis 4

Keep them votes coming.

I think most people are mentioning who their favorites are, not necessarily who is the most popular.

Actually there are many artists that fall into this category. The list is endless. This thread lists mostly bands and not one particular artist as was stated in the "title".

Jane's Addiction are great but certainly not the best! I agree on Nirvana though...

Hard Rock

Guns and Roses were quality

Too bad they spent the better part of the last 10 years cowering in their basements.

More on this later

It's a bummer to imagine what GNR could have been if they had been able to stick together and create more music. For as awesome as they are, they really only had 3 real albums and an EP...that's it. I think they would have become one of the best rock bands ever - hell, they almost are now, but their small catalog is limited. Just makes you wonder what they might have achieved.

Here's the latest:

Led Zeppelin - 13
The Beatles - 10
Pink Floyd - 9
The Who - 7
The Stones - 7
Elvis - 4
Jimi Hendrix - 4
Eric Clapton - 4
U2 - 4
Nirvana - 4

Amazingly, a total of 64 different rock artists have been mentioned. Remember, the term artist is meant to include both groups and individuals.

Keep those votes coming!

Of the compiled list I have seen all on the list except Elvis. My personal favorite on stage was Jimi Hendrix. Even though I was only 8 at the time the man had me in a trance. And I was in the press box so it wasn't the spicy air in the seats. But I have to agree with Gridiron that you haven't seen a stage show until you have seen Kiss. My kid and I have seen them 5 times together and some of you have seen the Kiss museum that lives in my apartment. They aren't much musically, but man can they rock a stadium. Although the Stones are always worth a visit, they are fading fast on stage. When I saw the Who it was their Quadophenia live tour a couple of years ago and the audience nearly booed them off the stage. The audience wanted the hits, not a static performance to back the movie. I would love to see them again as a 'best of' tour.

Never the Beatles(just like Backstreet Boys, and NSYNC). The Who and Led Zep were(are) much better than the Beatles or Stones. I'm surprised nobody said Milli Vannilli.
The Beatles are just like the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC??? How can you possibly compare the Beatles to the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC? While much of the Beatles music may not be technically that difficult, especially their earlier stuff they had an influence on music like perhaps no other group in modern music history. Further, their songs are the kind of songs that people have sang to for genertations. Certainly the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC will have die out and be a distant memory by the time their fans reach their 20s.

At any rate I would have to rate teh Beatles in my top 5 along with...

Rolling Stones
Zeppelin
Moody Blues
Doors

The kid and I talk frequently about how old something has to be to be designated a 'classic'. And we also discuss how many artists on the radio today will still be recording or touring 10 years from now. It's wonderful to see the longevity of some bands, but who will even care that Brittany Spears ever recorded anything? Remember the Spice Girls? Who cares? Even in the rock genre - I happen to enjoy Eminem, but will he have real staying power?
