Nope. Pizza began life in open air stalls being sold to passers by on the street in italy. The notion that it should be considered a gourmet food is a modern invention, one mostly back-ported to Europe from America.

In fact traditional gourmet in Italy looks down on pizza as something not deserving of a place in a restaurant with table cloths.

Pizza, like the hot dog, is a food to be enjoyed with friends while standing on your feet.
Now fuji, I know you come on this board and think you know everything about anything, you're a lawyer and sometimes doctor by day, and an economist and physicist by night, but don't try to tell me about how pizza is served in Italy now and in the last few decades. I'm not interested in you googling the history of pizza, I'm talking about today, and after visiting many Italian cities, Naples, Rome, Florence, Palermo, and numerous small towns you never heard of, and talking to hundreds of locals, friends and family, simply put, you are wrong and don't know what your're talking about on this topic.

You stick to eating pizza like a hot dog if you wish, more power to you, but please don't try to educate me on this topic.

So somebody just started a thread on best burger joints. Sometimes when I'm in Toronto I like to order up a pie, but never know what the best places are. I tried Pizza Nova last time as someone told me it was good, and while it was adequate, I wasn't all that impressed.
So, best pizza in downtown TO? Mostly interested in delivery, but dine-in opinions are appreciated as well!
The deep dish from www.chicagopizzakitchen.ca and Pizza Roma at Dufferin and Bloor (ask for there seafood pizza with white cream sauce if you love seafood) http://www.ristorante-roma.ca/

Now and in the last few decades both here and in Italy a raging joke has been perpetrated on the world. Pizza has taken on airs and been turned into a gourmet food by pretentious people who don't really understand what it's really about. The reason why you are not interested in googling the history of pizza is that it would tell you, on the first hit, that it's originally street food, not gourmet. The notion that pizza is a gourmet food is a modern conceit.

I'm starting to think that The Big Slice (Yonge at College? Elm?) isn't favoured. Is it even still there?

I always enjoyed a couple pieces from there at 2 am after visiting the dance parlours up and down the street.

does anyone in Toronto make it where the pepperoni is crisp when it is cooked?

I hate the DELI pepperoni most places use outside of Buffalo.

Also a quality cheese makes a huge difference.

I don't know if it's still around but I always liked Massimo's on College near Bathurst.
sadly, they appear to be gone. not sure if they moved, but their original location near Spadina was boarded up.

For a great Pizza, I don't think you can get better than Regina's Pizza on College near Ossington. There is a reason the place has been there for 40+years and never taken out an ad.

I actually like San Francesco's pizza, the one on Coxwell south of O' Connor. They dont overdo it but it has great flavour and the pizza is cooked thru not like some of the fast food joints with raw pizza dough.

In eastern Ontario, the Greeks make the best pizza. They don't scrimp on the toppings, and they bury everything under a thick layer of cheese. I'd love to find something similar downtown.

I kinda miss Frank Vetere's Chicago-style pizza, too. I won't be up around MajorMac anytime soon. Anything similar downtown?

The word 'pizza' may be Italian but every culture has a tradition of yummies grilled on top of a flat bread. Some roll them up after baking, some eat it flat. Call it pizza, tarte l'oignon, popia, souvlaki, felafel, bannock, damper or a naan wrap but it's pretty much universal.

They all have street versions, cafe versions and high end versions.

Too bad about Massimo's. I haven't been in the area for about 10 years but they were the best imo. The owner seemed to have some health problems. But I'll always remember his humour. He was a riot!

It closed up due to a fire, I believe.

I am a Dante"s lover, but seeing as I live downtown Regina is my go to place.

Was talking to someone tonight who ordered from Mickey's in Mississauga, They ordered the deep dish and the thin crust Miami, it had pepperoni, mushroom, green pepper. Said it was awesome, deep dish was good but just too much.

Can't believe I am going to have to drive all the way out there to try this pie. What a hike, further than Dante's
