on the threshold of hell
so many bands have put out live albums. any ideas about which are the best? my personal faves are

rolling stones --get yer ya-ya's out
roxy music --viva!
jimi hendrix --band of gypsies
david bowie --santa monica 72
portishead --roseland nyc
mc5 --kick out the jams
underworld --everything everthing

the way music has changed over the years, are live albums a thing of the past?

You know shack... totally agree with your first three picks... but I kinda get all misty eyed and think of basement parties in years past every time I hear Do You Feel Like We Do from Frampton...

Two others I would add:
Bob Dyaln - Bootleg Series 4
Bruce Springsteen - Main Point (bootleg)

I've got an old Bruce vinyl bootleg also. "Trust Your Car To The Man Who Wears The Star". His live shows consistently had the most energy and he always told good stories.

Way Out West
Rush, Exit... Stage Left

Stevie Ray Vaughan, Live at Montreux

Cheap Trick, Live at Boudakan

Although they all sound better to me on vinyl rather than digital...

sounds better, more "live"

You Can Trust Your Car to the Man Who Wears the Star and Main Point are the Same Bruce Springsteen bootleg, February 6, 1975 WMMO radio broadcast from The Main Point, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. On e of the few BS & the ESB shows with Suki Lahav on violin and backing vocals.

My favorites: Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - Live in the Promised Land [Winterland, San Francisco 15-12-'78], Southside Johnny & Little Steven Unplugged, [New York 11-93], Television - The Blow Up, [various, '78], David Bowie - David Live, [Philadelphia '74], Pearl Jam - 5 Alive, [Newcastle, UK 2-92].

www.
The perfect interaction between artist and audience: B.B. King "Live at the Regal." Cut just before B. crossed over to a white audience, this record is now in the bargain bins for about $9.00, and if you like the blues - or just great music - this one is a must.

Also check out Muddy Waters Live, which I gather has just been reissued with a bonus CD of another live show (I'm off to HMV tonight to check). Johnny Winter produced and plays; the old man was at his peak...Muddy's version of "She's Nineteen Years Old" should be an anthem for all the folk on this list!

All I need.

I listed The Who at Isle of Wight. However, you're right. I should have said Live At Leeds.
