So the story goes that I am a huge techie but I just cannot justify spending $600 on something that I make calls, message on What's App, once in awhile surf for info and check sports scores. I have been using a Galaxy S3 for about 3 years now, great phone but it has started to slow down to the point where it doesnt even recharge properly any more even with replacing a battery a few months back. So I am looking for a budget smartphone out there, budget meaning around the $200 or so range and unlocked because I travel frequently. Having done extensive research I am looking into the Moto G 2nd generation at a $180 bucks on American Amazon.

the reviews are good for what it is, but does anyone have any other recommendations?

Without a doubt the nexus 5! Now with its update to lollipop OS this phone is blazing bast...it's actually appears faster compared to my Note 4 running Kit Kat. I have both. You can't go wrong this phone. Just be careful with it as the built quality is not like a tank and the battery is not the biggest. Camera is OK, not the best but OK.

Although I still like note 4 for many other reasons such as multitasking, battery, screen size and is my go to phone now.

I have seen the Nexus 5 on Amazon listed around the $400 range, way over my budget with my casual use I just cannot justify spending that kind of money on something I wont use to its full capacity.

An invite to buy a phone? yeah that totally smacks of hipster/douche bag hahhaha.
Actually just a small company that has trouble producing enough to meet demand.

I'll bet most hipsters have never heard about it, just the big time geeks.

I've been using the moto G for over a year and it's a great phone. Camera is not as good as on the high end phones, especially for night shots, but it's still better than the Sony Experia M for example.

You can pick up a gently used and unlocked BlackBerry Z30 on Kijiji in the 200-250 range. Great phone!

Samsung Galaxy Core LTE is good value, pretty quick, cost to buy outright without a tab $200-250.

Samsung Galaxy Ace 2x was on sale for $89. Not as fast. I wouldnt pay current price of $129 at best buy.

Heard the moto g is pretty good.

After some research I decided to go with the Motorola G second generation which I managed to get for about $190 and I am very happy with it. I have played around with Windows phones and I just didnt like them, the Motorola has that Android system which I have gotten used to and enjoy, the phone has the apps that I want and fits my requirements and also a dual sim card slots for my traveling and 16gb along with an extra SD slot.

Picked up a Huawei 215 y from 7-11 for a hundred bucks and bought another hundred in credit for texts and calls good for a year from activation date. Just paid cash so should be a pretty anonymous way of communicating.

One plus One isn't hipster at all but its not the droid you're looking for either for the price point ( sorry, couldn't help the SW reference)

Grab a used blackberry, the Z10 and Z30 are pretty solid amidst the abuse from like everyone. I have one as a backup in case my android dies. Moto G is a spectacular phone though for its price point.

Exactly. Scouser should read up on it before judging, BBBUT, he's bought into the marketing by brand.
Let him choose what he wants and be stuck with it.

Good price. I was looking at the Moto G as well but the 2nd gen won't work on Mobilicity.

For those interested, staples.ca has some decent prices for unlocked phones on their website.
