It's true that Sunset Grill is a Toronto institution but it is as boring as it gets. It is just your basic assembly line food that has no flavour or style of any kind. I went there with my Canadian friends who were so excited to take me and of course I ate the food since we were there but it was like plain bread and water. When I asked for salsa for the eggs instead of ketchup (which is an abomination) the girl looked at me surprised and said: "we don't have that"! She didn't even offer an apology.

Now my friends had to accept my suggestion so I took them to "Maggie's" on College just east of Bathurst. Once we got the food, a silence fell over the table since that is the ultimate sign of a good meal. When no one speaks since all are too busy eating. My Mother and Grandmother always said that and I'll take it to my grave. One of my friends had the french toast with cinnamon and apricot syrup. The other one had scrambled eggs with spicy salsa, fresh chorizo and a side of buttermilk pancakes mixed with vanilla and strawberries. All is fresh along with the juices, lattes and the fruit that comes on all the plates.

None of my friends go to SSG anymore.

Yeah, sure, you can go to Mitzi's or Faema or the Old Mill for Brunch if you want.

But for bacon, eggs, toast, etc. you can't beat SSG.

Anyone know of any restaurants that serve breakfast all day?

Found a gem last weekend, Sunset Grill, in the beaches area. When I got there, literally a line-up almost all the way out to the sidewalk.

Food was absolutely yummy. Pancakes stacked a mile high, steak n' eggs sizzled to perfection, crispy homefries etc.

Any other gems out there?
If you don't want to wait in line at Sunset Grill, you can always head back to Queen and Coxwell and try The Tulip (though you will find a line-up there on weekend mornings as well). Fairly basic menu, but the portions are large, and the peameal bacon & eggs is great!

In the HAMMER we have THE EGG AND I 3 locations BEST Breakfast I ever had. I like DENNYS too when in NiAGARA FALLS although I finfd it more expensive than anywhere else. LOVE the "MOONS OVER MY HAMMY"
aka toasted scrambled egg and ham sandwich. Never did get a taste for GRITS though. Reminds me of eating paste in school back in the 60's. Paste had more taste too ! lol.

I agree, 'The Egg and I' is great for breakfast.

I like the egg and I as well. Also try the bright spot near Ottawa and main (or King, I can't remember) across from the no frills.

Thanks for that Bridgeman... I'm sold.

I have been in there a few times recently... but only for coffee or tea. I did notice though how much others were enjoying their food and how delicious and generous the servings looked.

Now I'll have to try it for sure.

Actually, yes you can.

If you want plain, boring, assembly line bacon/eggs/toast then sure, stick to SSG.

Look at it this way, would you rather enjoy listening to a great guitarist while you have breakfast or would you rather just be handed a guitar with no strings?

That's the difference between SSG and a good, delicious breakfast.

There is another Sunset Grill, north east Danforth and Woodbine. If it is busy there, another real good greasy spoon is right beside it, an old bus terminal.

I was in Montreal a few years ago and was taken to a place called KOSTAS I think that was the name anyway.Their "specialty " is a concoction called a MISH MASH A real artery clogger of a breakfast. An omlette filled with scarmbled eggs, onion, home fries bacon and sausage if I can recall I was kinda buzzed but it was good.

'Union Station' or something like that, can't remember the name.

The best time to go is around two or three in the morning. Don't mind the Cops standing guard at the front either.

If you time it right, you could see a beating, stalbing or if you're real lucky, a good ole fashioned SHOOT'EM UP!!

Great food though, their 'Super Breakfast' is outstanding......might even be better than a 1 playas recommendation :)

Surprised it wasn't mentioned already but Mel's on Bloor in the Annex gets my vote. Huge meals like mentioned plus a huge pankake as an appetizer. (and it's open 24h)
