Can someone explain why

Looks like a mess to me

"In an explosive torrent of gestural vigor, Untitled embodies the indomitable force of Basquiat's creative insurgency, which, in a flourishing conflagration of word, color, and mark, sent shockwaves through downtown Manhattan in the early 1980s and inaugurated a radical return to figurative painting," Sotheby's description reads

He is dead and has become collectable is main reason

If a forger paints a painting that even expert cannot tell is a forgery it is worth only a few thousand. Seen it on the art program where experts examine art then after exhaustive study conclude it is a fraud. Value goes from a potential million to a few grand.

Nuts

The rich have way to much money

Saw Basquait show at AGO. Some of his stuff was interesting some was a joke. Because he did it it was supposed to be deep.

Mark Rothko drew this little beauty (worth in the millions). Google it.
The AGO paid 1 or 2 million for it back in 1996.

Insane!!!!!!!!!!!

I suck at painting, and even I could've drawn up that piece of garbage in my sleep

It gets sillier. They will sell it some day for a huge profit

Looks like he soaked a sponge in paint then dabbed it on the canvas. Sometimes even galleries get fucked buying a fraud. The market is saturated with frauds and no one can tell. Total joke.

Saw Rothko at the OAG as well. Some was quite nice as was Basquait but compared to some of the beautiful sculpture and real paintings ..... I just shake my head and wonder WTF

BTW a Madonna quote at the exhibit said Basquait changed her ?????????? Basquait was a heroin addict and ODed. Shame. Think of all the crap he could have painted once he perfected his technique

Love Sothbeys quote as they try to talk buyers into believing the Emperor has cloths on

"word" ??!! I see a few letters scribbled on his painting but now we are supposed to believe those are deep meaning words

In the immediate because the winning bidder (from Japan) got into a bidding war and had the resources to keep going up.

As to your real question why would anyone want this Basquiat, I can't answer your question, since I wouldn't want it for myself!
