This question has been asked many times, many ways, but I'm looking for a bar, preferably downtown, with a wide a eclectic assortment of beers - like Smokeless Joe's.

Any ideas?

I haven't been there and it's gotten mixed reviews in terms of service.

Ah Smokeless Joe's. A blast from the past. I haven't been there in a long time. Does it even exist anymore?

I last time I was there, it had a new owner, also named Joe. Didn't seem to be the same place, once the original Joe had gone.

I haven't been, but isn't the Rotterdam noted for a large selection of beers?

Esplanade Bier Markt-The Esplanade
C'est What-Front Street East
Beerbistro-King Street East(?)
Smokeless Joe's
Allen's-The Danforth
Bow & Arrow-Yonge @ Davisville
Feather's-Kingston Road
Black Bull-Queen West
These are a few of the 'Beer Bars' I have tended to visit when I'm in Toronto.
Other bars I enjoy, with less extensive, but still acceptable beer selections include:
-the Irish pub next to the Esplanade Bier Markt
-the International Irish Embassy on Yonge, just north of Front
-James Joyce Irsih Pub on Bloor
-Dora Keogh's-The Danforth
-Elephant & Castle on Yonge
-Auld Spot-The Danforth
-Bishop & Belcher-Queen West

One of the nicest pubs in the city, there's another location on King as well.

The Madison is good too, especially if you like college girls.

Don't know about that, but yet it is still around, and the current owner's name is Joe.

Rotterdam on King St. used to have a varied selection from all over the world and they also brew Amsterdam beer there. Paupers Pub on Bloor St. and the Madison(on Madison Ave) also both have a pretty fair selection. The Madison also has a a great patio and nice scenery, lots of UofT gals. Cheers for now, Dabbler

:^) I just like me beer! Used to be a Brewer, and I am still involved in the production of alcoholic beverages (legally! I might add), although as of today I am currently without employment through no fault of my own.
I don't get to TO as much as I'd like, but most of these establishments I do hit when I'm in town for a weekend (I told you, I like BEER!).
As for C'est What closing, I'm aware that the space next door with the Live Bands closed last month due to an exorbitant rent increase, but I'm not aware of C'est What itself closing.
WRT the Rotterdam, I haven't been there in years, so I can't really comment on the current selection. I know Joel Manning from the Amsterdam used to make some cracking beers, as did Michael Hancock at Denison's and Ron Keefe at the Granite on Eglinton.
Prosit!

The Irish Pub is called Fionn Macool's. There are 3 of them downtown,
- the one you mention on the Esplanade,
- the one on King St. W just west of Spadina and
- the one on Adelaide between University and York.

Other pubs downtown are
- P J O'Brians, behind the King Eddy hotel.
- Duke of York, on Prince Edward west of Avenue Rd in Yorkville
- Duke of Richmond, SW corner of the Eaton's centre
- Duke of Westminster, First Canadian Place Adelaide St. entrance
- Duke of Devon, T D Centre Wellington St entrance
- Duke of Argyle, John St. in the entertainment district
- The Fox & ? pub on John beside the Argyle
- The Firkin pub on John opposite City TV
- The Foggy Dew on King W at Niagara
- The Jason George at Front and Jarvis
- The Bishop and Belcher on Queen just east of Spadina
- The Jersey Giant on Front at Church (beside C'est what)

Beer Bistro blows every other place away.
Seriously.
If you like beer, and I mean really LIKE beer, you must go there.

Not that any of the rest of those places are bad, mind you, they just don't have the selection that Bistro does.
;)
Heck, I've been to ALL those places. LOL

Ranger68:
Good for you. I'll agree with you 100% about the Beerbistro's selection. The only qualms I have are about the part-owner, Stephen Beaumont, who I find a little bit arrogant and egotistical. I have met him in the past (years ago) and I find him to be a bit presumptuous and more than a little bit out of touch with the realities of operating a successful and profitable brewery. When he (and many other 'critics') start talking about No'2 pencil lead and 'canned' peaches I get a little turned off. None of these people have EVER operated a small brewery trrying to survive in a competitive marketplace. Although I have a great deal of respect for Roger Protz, Michael Jackson and Ian Bowering, and can credit them for my initial interest in alternative beers and brewing in general, I really have major issues with the way most of them try to portray themselves as the 'definitive' authority on all things brewing. Only a few years ago, Michael Jackson had no idea what Caramel Malt was, despite having written about it's character for many years. Most of them, like most wine critics, have little understanding or interest in what makes a Brewery/Winery a profitable and successful operation. You can actually look at past issues of the Wine Spectator and Cigar Afficianado and figure out the ratings based on who spent the most money advertizing each month! The same holds true for All About Beer.
Cheers,
Tank69
